(by virtue of it being flying and unidentified)
It looked like a fire - and orange-yellow flickering light. A bit like a hot air balloon, except without the balloon and moving too fast. It just went across the sky about as fast as a plane, but didn't make any noise. Size wise, it was maybe about the size of a light aeroplane at a couple of thousand feet (I live near an airfield) when I first saw it.
It went up into a cloud and vanished.
I don't believe it's aliens, or anything like that, but I can't figure out what the hell it was.

Not what you expect to see drifting across Welwyn Garden City of an evening, but a distinct possibility.
I might try and make one sometime.
Thanks

It was more than likely another life form, from a massively advanced civilisation, in a ship that could probably wipe the floor with everything all our nations on earth could muster armament wise, just, you know, tooling around, doing a few ftl versions of a handbrake turn around jupiter or something, scorching and skipping upper atmospheres to freak the backwards earthlings, that sort of thing
Happens all the time

To this day my sceptical level-headed mind has tried and failed to explain what I saw.
It was just past midnight, and a bright, pure white light was slowly glowing and fading in brightness. Every time it reached it's peak 4 or 5 other lights would emerge from it and move about 3 inches (to me)to the right (from my vantage point I had no point of reference to judge distance. It could've been 30 feet or 3 miles).
These would all fade out in the sequence they emerged, in the same spot. This went on for abour 45 minutes.
When I woke the next day I went back for a second look, and couldn't see any roads or paths nearby; it was a heavily wooded valley.
Any suggestions would be welcome...
