To be your brother in law
he must be married to either one of your siblings or to one of your wives siblings, or I suppose in a very tenuous link to Brother in Law status one of his siblings could have married one of you or your wives siblings, but that isn't really a brother in law.

So I reckon you've actually got it wrong and he isn't your brother in law, he's something else.

"A brother-in-law is one's sibling's husband, one's spouse's brother, or one's spouse's sibling's husband."

Now the two non incestuous options have already been put forward (i.e. he hasn't just become your wives actual brother) so I again think you have got it wrong and he isn't actually your brother in law.

In case anyone cares enough or wanted me to be wrong enough, My wifes mother has just remarried and officially adopted his kids making my wifes ex boyfriend her brother and my brother in law.

It also means any time my wife has a go at me I can say "Ha yeah but you fucked your brother"
