Should I go and see Skindread and Karnivool on Friday night?
hmmm?

edit: the fuckers have only gone and sold out of tickets, rendering this thread pointless.

Go for it.
I love seeing live bands, i actually miss festival food now... if anyone knows where i can get a greasy burrito for £10, let me know.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:21, Reply)
Yes
Skindred are amazing live.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:29, Reply)
I've seen them a number of times
and know the drummer. he is a local boy. I preferred his old band tbh, but they never went anywhere.

I'll go, they are awesome. and I want to see Karnivool.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:33, Reply)
What kind of style are Karnivool?
Heard of them but not much deeper than that..
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:38, Reply)
I guess it would get called progressive
not loads of twiddly wanking guitars, but really quite melodic. Worth checking out though.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:40, Reply)
I have no idea who they are.

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:29, Reply)
Sadly neither have I
They sound like 'young people' music

*creaks*

v. heavy
ragga-metal
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:33, Reply)
WTF
is "ragga-metal"? I am old.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:36, Reply)
probably something they made up
from wiki: Skindred's musical style mixes heavy metal, punk rock and reggae. The group refers to this style as "Ragga metal"
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:39, Reply)
That actually sounds like something I'd like to listen to.

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:41, Reply)
they are very heavy
superb live, very high energy
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:43, Reply)
I was thinking that
anything like Bad Brains?
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:45, Reply)
not familiar with bad brains
but by the look of them and the description on wikipedia they are probably not that far off.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:47, Reply)
They were INCREDIBLE live in their day
there's a DVD of them at CBGB's in the early 80s that is fucking brilliant. One of the most energetic bands ever....
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:48, Reply)
Certainly some similarities,
Yeah.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:49, Reply)
ragga metal
does it consist of thrashy guitars with a pulsing sub-bassline?
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:41, Reply)
no, it's better than that

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:43, Reply)
that
sounds like 'living colour' then! Mainly cos its the only metal band i could think off with the black fellas in, you know, they like reggae and that, good rhythm etc.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:48, Reply)
It's a musical style
where the drummer grasps a sex toy between this thighs to play the drums as his penis is too small.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:39, Reply)
SUNN O)))
Has anyone ever seen these characters? i have long been aware of their existence, but never really heard any of their stuff. They are due to play a tiny venue in glasgow in december and I think i may HAVE to attend it.

Checked a few clips on youtube and obviously you cannot get the full visceral effect of the live show, so it seemed a bit lame, and possibly quite dull, although i know actually being there, being subjected to the relentless bass drones would be a different story altogether.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:50, Reply)
Me.
Not bad - but not as great as Boris from Japan who are the same crew.

Live is a lot better than on record - but they are a bit 'muso' whereas Boris are like an updated less-silly Japanese Black Sabbath - with a fucking beautiful girl guitarist.

MmmmMmmmmmMmm
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:56, Reply)
Boris,
Excellent name.

Yeah, it is a bit bizarre, because they are also playing the infamous Berghain in Berlin and the The Sage in Gateshead, and then a small basement in Glasgow. It will either sound incredible, or it will destroy the place, preferably both :) I like to think of them as Pan sonic, with guitars...they actually covered a Suicide track with Pan sonic, so it isn't really that far from the truth.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:07, Reply)
Suicide
are playing with The Stooges when they perform Raw Power next spring.

Just thought I'd mention the mighty Stooges, y'know, to be controversial...
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:41, Reply)
they ain't no david bowie

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:52, Reply)
and the endless cycle begins again.....

Suicide
were a fucking brilliant band, and i was completely wetting myself at the prospect of seeing them in Glasgow, at the opening of a new venue The CCA.

We were in a pub across the venue, buying some beer, when i suggested we head over as they might be giving a away free beer, free HOEGARRDEN perhaps. We laughed at the madness of such an idea and continued drinking our fizzy pish. Eventually we decant to the venue and on entering see a reasonable queue of folk, all waiting to get, yes, you guessed it, free fucking Hoegaarden. Villified, yet still annoyed, we managed one half pint each before it ran out.

The place was completely rammed and the room in which Suicide were to play was on a 'one in one out' basis. We eventually cram our way in and then Suicide arrive on stage. OK, they are older, but that doesn't matter, OK, Alan Vega looks like a fat drug addict who can't sing a fucking note, no change there. Martin Rev look like a thin drug addict with a permed mullet and huge shades, no change there either. I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the first track, which i couldn't make out, it was just a rumbling noise with Vega yelping over th top of it. I vainly sghout out for 'Ghost Rider'......then to my horror, they started playing that very song, but it was like no version i had ever heard....it was like watching your drunk 60 year old uncle fail miserable at some sort of rude karaoke..It was terrible, awful, worse than i could have ever expected, I had to get out before the ruined everything, the whole mystique, their fucked up energy, everything

Jim Kerr of Simple Minds fame was standing next to us and i muttered loud enough for him to hear that 'this is fucking SHIT' and stormed out, allowing another helpless soul to gain entry. So after all that time waiting, i managed just 1.5 songs from Suicide...It really was that bad

Never got in to the Stooges, at all.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:56, Reply)
That's pretty heartbreaking
Kind of like my experience at Tortoise the other week - but I had no idea what they were about and thus had zero expectations. I was still surprised to find that they failed to meet those expectations.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 11:10, Reply)
I'm still not over it you know,
It has been the only gig i have ever walked/flounced out of.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 11:28, Reply)
Yeah, go for it.
Skindred are awesome.
I'm gonna see Therapy? on Friday, which I'm really looking forward to.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:50, Reply)
I'm curious to know if they are still playing
the whole of the new album, I saw them a few months ago and the show was really good, but almost entirely the new stuff.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:52, Reply)
I saw them at Download this year,
And they played mostly old stuff.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:54, Reply)
bands tend to do that at festivals
which can be good. iron maiden at a festival for example were freaking awesome.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:58, Reply)
They fucking rocked at Download two years ago.

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:58, Reply)
I saw them just after bruce had come back
I was happy.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:58, Reply)
I have seen them three times.
I saw them on the BNW tour, the AMOLAD tour and at download. I was gutted not to go and see them at Twickenham, but the mrs made me go to a wedding instead.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:01, Reply)
you need to see Flight 666
order it now
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:03, Reply)
I would
but I object to paying more than ten pounds for a DVD
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:15, Reply)
it is really good though

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:18, Reply)
I'm tired.

(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:54, Reply)
would you like
some huggles and fluff and kittums?
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 9:58, Reply)
No.
But I'd like to squeeze your bum cheeks.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:06, Reply)
Not surprising
they are pretty amazing. Nice and taut too since I started running again.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:09, Reply)

I've seen skindred a few times and each time wondered "Why?".

They are really good musicians but the music just seems to end up messy rather than a fusion.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:13, Reply)
After a bit of you tubing,
I believe you should go see Skindred. They seem more appealing out of the 2. Karnivool just sound like any other band which is like them. I hope this helps.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 10:53, Reply)
I've seen skindred a number of times and they are good
I prefer Karnivool for home listening though, by a long way. They are quite a lot like a lot of other bands, but they have some good bits of song crafting which appeal to me.
(, Tue 13 Oct 2009, 11:10, Reply)
mmm
then Karnivool it is then. I only saw a couple of vids :-)
