According to that article 'U2 lack the charm of David Bowie' - I'd say they had precisely the same charm as David Bowie, in fucking spades.
But quite why you're posting this shit when there are 19th Century pubs to be cycled to, I really don't fucking know.
ffs

they're headlining friday which is arguably the lowest of the headline days. Which means there's a chance that saturday and sundays headliners will be even "bigger"
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:13, Reply)
the article has it right. they have been far from their best for at least 15 years
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:15, Reply)
they're still by most measures a big name band.

no doubt about it.
it's the repeated assurances that they are the biggest band in the world every time they are mentioned, coupled with their mediocre music (it's not actually bad, it's average), the glowing reviews they get from most music press, despite the mediocrity and their annoying political/environmental agenda
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:21, Reply)
I don't care what some idiot journalist thinks about music.
see the quotes on the tv ads and in papers and stuff though

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:34, Reply)
it means that either a) they don't know about music, b) they don't listen to the stuff they review or c) they are sucking U2s's cocks.
and despite not caring what they say, people being shit at their job, either by being stupid, or deliberately, is annoying

but that's not the point, the inability of some on here to realise that people can listen to the same piece of music and have totally conflicting ideas about the quality is pretty fucking autism.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:06, Reply)
it's the level of hype that makes this a (smallish) issue for me.
I can recognise good song writing and such, even if I don't like the music itself, and I think that U2s recent stuff is as amateurish as a lot of stuff I hear from unsigned bands all the time.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:10, Reply)
I don't suppose the middle-of-the-road benders who attend Glasters these days would like them, but I would.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:21, Reply)
What would your headliners be ina perfect world?
Metallica
Muse
Radiohead
See, it's not about your favourite bands necessarily, but who is best at a festival...I feel like there should be something a bit more dancy in there.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:18, Reply)
Is Dylan a festival singer? Would he be swamped by the stage and enormous crowd?
the others yes, but I feel a mixture of contempory and older bands give s good mix and keeps a festival relevant.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:24, Reply)
I hope he would anyway, and I would love to see all 8+ minutes of Hurricane live.

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:26, Reply)
metallica
iron maiden
white stripes
massive attack
manu chao
primal scream
alice in chains
chilli peppers
If I could choose any though, AC/DC and Zeppelin would be in there.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:25, Reply)
very rock heavy, I quite like the variety you can get at festicals, bit of rock, metal, maybe some hip-hop and dance later in the evening.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:29, Reply)
chemical brothers get an honourable mention, as does John Digweed, but that may have been because I was stuffed to the gills with mushrooms
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:30, Reply)
this is not a question that can ever really be answered, must be fun to put on a festival when you land a band that you really wanted
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:33, Reply)
There were a lot of screamy metal bands at Sonisphere, not really my cup of tea. Machine Head were shit. Yet they have like a billion rabid fans.
also, Slipknot inexplicably have a huge number of fans. so much so that when the singer did an acoustic set of his new solo project stuff it drew a massive crowd who didn't seem to recognise that it was fucking awful.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:35, Reply)
...and the Pope said to his aide:
"Whooo the fuckin' 'ell are Sliiipknot
Whooo the fuckin' 'ell are Sliiipknot
Whooo the fuckin' 'ell are Slipknot
in relation to me getting out of bed?"

probably not as bad as Linking Park (who are shit anyway) previewing the singer's side-project half way through the performance
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:05, Reply)
I'd had quite enough of Linkin Park after half an hour, but for him to kick the band off, and bring his other one on was outrageous. Particularly as they were headlining!
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:07, Reply)
a lot of people just wandered off. The side-project was terrible as well, just rehashed Linkin Park.
Which bands did you enjoy then?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:10, Reply)
fucking awesome.
Metallica were obviously good, although not as good as when I saw them in March. It was almost like they were demanding more cheering and applause when it wasn't quite due. Still kicked ass.
Airbourne, Skindred both great.
Coheed and Cambria were great, mainly because they played a full version of Iron Maiden's The Trooper, and did it very well.
Lauren Harris was good. Sexy, and her band rocked as well. Plus she's the daughter of the bassist from Maiden.
how about you?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:14, Reply)
really rocked I thought, got a few old favourites in, and a great atmosphere.
Skindred I thought were superb- kudos to anyone who can get a crowd moving that early in the day.
Heaven and Hell gave me a giggle, didn't see much on the smaller stages though, since I get fatigued very fast and thus prefer to conserve energy.
Our camp-space was awesome, we couldn't be bothered to walk up for Alien Ant Farm or for Airborne, but the wind direction was just right and we heard the whole thing.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:20, Reply)
Heaven and Hell were great, I listened to them from the camping space too. Wind was pretty good for where we were too.
I'd forgotten Alien Antfarm. they were worth watching for Smooth Criminal, and for the weird bass player alone.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 13:24, Reply)
a big fan of Glastonbury anyway.
Sonisphere looks as though it could be good though
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:21, Reply)
it was awesome. fucking expensive though, so it was fortunate that I won tickets
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:22, Reply)
as well :)
Skindred were amazing
And of course NIN and Metallica were great
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:24, Reply)
Skindred are always good. Particularly when you know some of them ;-)
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:27, Reply)
songs were not the ones I'd personally have picked. But when they did Hurt, (and I'm not a big NIN fan) the hairs on the back of my neck rose
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:28, Reply)
which lessened the impact of Hurt to me. Johnny Cash made that his own anyway, which again has somewhat spoiled the original
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:29, Reply)
and how flush with cash I am feeling. or if I win tickets again :-)

golden era of festivals?
No?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 12:28, Reply)
For now you just nay-say everything.
Then when someone makes a comment indicating they can take no more, you can say "I actually like lots of festivals. I saw a festival in Portsmouth in 1982 featuring bands that had not yet formed. We were all high on Jif at the time."
You dig?

You couldn'tr just replace 'aura' with 'wizened old cock' though, could you?
Thanks luv.
