Quick question for the bibliophiles...
... and I know there's no shortage.

I'm trying to identify a book that was my favourite when I was very young, and which I've not seen for about 30 years. I can't remember much about it, except some of the text:

This is a dot, little and fine
Stretch it out, and now it's a line.
Bend it a bit, and what will it be?
The finest circle you ever did see...

I can't believe that that was the whole thing - even by the standards of children's books, that seems a bit thin.

Does it ring a bell with anyone else?

You read children's books?
Surely only the very pretentious ones?

He steals them off his turkish boy

and I'm ashamed.

They'll kick you out of the reading room in the Library of Pretentious Literary Leanings for that.

I know.
I'm using internet anonymity for a reason.

You aren't anonymous if would-be stalkers can find out your address and threaten you in about 3 minutes flat.

It's close, certainly...

Mine was Thucydides' 'History of the Peloponnesian War'.

It wasn't really.

I prefer Herodotus.

(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:44, Reply)
really? why's that?

(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:48, Reply)
Largely because I've not read Thucydides.
Largely Entirely
(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:49, Reply)
Ha!
Have you ever read Lucretius' 'On The Nature of the Universe'?

He expounds the theory that everything is made from atoms (I found this amazing) - but also some monumentally incorrect other stuff. It's quite readable for that very reason.
(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:53, Reply)
I haven't...
... but it's on my list of things to read if I get study leave next year.
(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:55, Reply)
And...
...oddly enough he suggests there is no such thing as the will of God(s) and that all is down to chance in an indifferent universe.

What tish and pish eh?

(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 15:58, Reply)

(, Mon 11 Jan 2010, 16:00, Reply)
That would make a less compelling title for a book about shagging.

TERRIBLE nom de plume as well.
You're either saying 'I'm a neanderthal living in the modern age, at the dump', or 'I just LOVE 'Top Gear', me'.

Neither of which is frightfully enticing, I'd say.
