HELP URGENTLY REQUIRED!!!
For the 1st time in about 4 years i have my entire CD collection (about 700ish) immediediately to hand.
This presents me with a big ol' quandry.
I have no idea what to listen to cos of too much choice and don't want to just start at the beginning and work through to the end. I have stuff to do so can't risk anything too mad but I keep reaching for the ACDC, Butthole Surfers, Flaming Lips and such. At present we are about halfway through Kate Bush's "The Red Shoes" and I need inspiration.
Any suggestions?
Apart from MTFU or Fuck Off or suchlike.

Hrm
I've been listening to Belle and Sebastian Boy with the arab strap album, some Dresden Dolls and some Bang Bangs mostly today. Put me in a good mood.

If you've got it
Mer de Noms by A Perfect Circle is always good for a quick blast.

that is a great album
thirteenth step or whatever it is called is also great.

not quite as good as tool though

Thirteenth Step does have my fave APC song of all time on it
That being The Noose.

Will agree with you that Tool are better than APC.

Try throwing them all up in the air and playing the first one to land in your CD-player's slot.
If multiple CDs land in the slot - instant mash-up.

Aaaaah, the "scattergun" approach!
Involves too much entropy for my liking, I've spent most of the last 4 years trying to get the house the way I want it. To use your approach, appealing as it is, would be a big step backwards.
I only got round to putting up the shelves yesterday, need to make a point of using them...
Anyway, with the average single CD and case weighing just under 100g that'd make it getting on for 70kg. I'm not throwing that kind of weight around the living room, the mrs would batter me ;-)

Perhaps you can try this instead
Perhaps you could plaster part of the ceiling with an adhesive that gradually releases the CDs over time, and construct something to catch the falling CDs and send them off to the CD player. Once the CD player has finished, it could use it's powerful eject-mechanism to shoot the CD back onto the ceiling. If a CD falls before the current CD finishes playing, the CD player will eject the CD in time to receive the newly-landed CD.

i once organised my cd collection, not by alphabet or genre
but by the colour of the spine, into a roughly rainbow progression, with black and white bars at the end
It was a complete cunt if i wanted to find anything specific, but it was good to just pick a green or blue cd and see what i got

I like this.
*gives blousey seal of approval*

Alternatively
Arrange them in a 2D rainbow progression with the hue going from left to right and the saturation (grey-ness of the colour) or brightness/lightness going from top to bottom. Or if you could somehow arrange them in a 3D fashion, the saturation could go from top to bottom and the brightness/lightness from front to back.

Are you a synaesthete by any chance?

I have a very bad back and a cold
and got no sleep last night and am grumpy and weepy today.
However, I have awesome pain pills, kleenex, alcohol and am making lobster ravioli for dinner. So WIN!
