new thread bandwagon jumped on
i've just looked through 860 images from a quote&unquote 'professional photographer' of which, less than 20 are in focus, not blurred due to handheld shutter speeds slower than 1/80 sec and of those, NONE, and i mean not one, are even remotely close to being correctly exposed. the guy's using a fuckin canon eos 5d with a fast lens for god's sake, i can do better with my phone. and i have a fucking iphone. what's made you marvel at the balls of some people and how they remain employed lately?
alt question: where should i hide the bodies when this shit starts to really get to me?

I have nothing to contribute to this thread.

Same as Chompy with the added input
that I don't understand most of the first line.

I thought he was talking about that godawful Radio 4 show.

I used to get this all the bloody time
Being a journalist, many 'professional' photographers would send in images suggesting they were 'perfect for publication'.

The worst were amateurs attending race events. How about you get more than two thirds of the bike or car in the image then, just maybe, we'll talk, eh?

Even worse were people getting in touch to ask us to back them to get accreditation for a race event. "They won't approve me unless a magazine or paper will confirm I'm going for them. I'm afraid I don't have any photos to send you yet, but I have got a XXXXXX (insert latest SLR fad camera here) which Practical Photography says is the best."

Gah!

this dude's a joker
apparently he put down three quarters of a bottle of whiskey while shooting
might have somethign to do with the blurriness.
the joke is, they paid him a shitload. i sat at my desk trying to remotely art direct the thing.. now recently they sent me to the relentless NASS festival, armed with a fuckin £400 nikon slr and a basic lens, and i got them over 150 good usable relevant in focus correctly exposed images.. they could have sent me out and not paid me a damn thing extra, and we'd have shitloads of shots.
fail.

Familiar story
I'm a writer, I'm shit with cameras, I don't even own an SLR ferchrissakes, and I've gone out and done, for free, better jobs than some paid piss-artists...

Eat the bodies and save the kneecaps for your display cabinet.

I donno what I hate more, 'photographers' who have a few nice holiday snaps....
... or Web Designers/Developers who don't do anything more advance than "File -> Save As Webpage..." in their pirated copy of Fireworks or, even worst, Word. There are so many web people out there who don't know how to code and it makes me WAH WAH WAH that they seem to get quite a lot of work, normally pitty-work from Uncle Bob's garden centre.

i fall sort of into that category
hence the fact i market myself as a designer, not a web designer. i do design pages, menus, interfaces, flash etc, but i hand it over to coders to make it work. otherwise i'd go mad. no amount of money would make me want to learn code, i have issues with formulas and numbers, and transposing letters etc, my think-box doesn't like it. pretty pictures, now that's my forte.

I dabbled in coding for a while
but my head just about exploded. I wish it was easier to understand but my eyes just gloss over and saliva escapes from my mouth.

Gonz,
I'm going to have to learn how to do some stuff like that for work.
Nothing too pretty just filesharing in a passworded area, what should I be looking at?

You mean via a web-interface, so they go to the page, put in their credentials, and can upload/download files?
If you don't need the web interface, and everyone knows how to FTP, use that.
If you're the only one uploading, then you can FTP it into a folder and let PHP do the rest, it would be quite simple.
If you're all uploading/downloading/changing permisions, then something like DropBox would be a good sollution =)

I generally work on the premise of 1 in 3 photos being decent if I'm taking pictures at something
Which is far easier when I borrow an SLR compared to my compact. Some random guy on Flickr started favouriting some of the pics I took last time I was out somewhere, which was a bit strange.

i try for about the same photographing places and things
maybe one in ten when photoing sports or anything with lots of action or low light. but i'm an amateur.
see?/

Man!
It's bad enough being a photographer (noone wants to pay you and everyone thinks they can do your job easily) without inept twatish 'photographer' who give us a bad name. I once had to fix 100 wedding photos for someone where the photographer had used the wrong film, got exposures wrong and taken group photos with grave stones in the way
(, Wed 11 Aug 2010, 17:54, Reply)
it's even worse when the person making the cockup
can't even use the 'wrong film' or 'dirt on the lens' or 'blah blah some old shite' excuse, because he's shooting DIGITAL where you get a fuckin preview of your abomination there and then so you can see it's out of focus, dark, blurred, and blue tinged.
