Yes. In real life I am Dave Vanian.

I just had to google him.
I had no idea you were so effeminate.

I saw The Damned supporting Motorhead a while back
They were really, really good - I was most surprised, as I only like their first LP. That is a fucking brilliant punk rock record, though.

Even though I sport a mohawk
I'm not that into punk. That said, the best punk album is Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 14:49, Reply)
Most punk is shit.
Most 'punk' is not punk.

Some of the original stuff's amazing. Real 'punk rock' like mid-60s garage I LOVE.

I think that's why the album I mentioned is great
It is proper punk, it doesn't sound like classic punk, punk rock or 'pop punk', it's something else, more raw.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 14:57, Reply)
I don't know them, thanks for the tip.

(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:02, Reply)
Might not be up your street at all
But I think they're worth a listen.
(The album does mix in some drum 'n' bass style samples, just a 'heads up' in case you hate that sort of thing).

Sounds more like my brother's cup of tea
but I am more open-minded than I make out.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:06, Reply)
I am too
Although seem to prefer the more aggressive, loud, percussion-heavy music most of the time. Depends on the mood I'm in.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:07, Reply)
My brother recommends the new Revolting Cocks album.
Gibby Haynes from the Butthole Surfers (of whom I have been a huge fan for many years) guests on one track, always a good idea to have Gibby on board.

Have you listened to Clutch?
you might hate them, but their early stuff is raw heavy rock, the newer is a bit more blues-tinged. Got some great stoner lyrics throughout.

I recommend their song The Great Outdoors for a taster.

They're a band I've been meaning to listen to more of
Therefore, I shall.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:16, Reply)
they have some great album names
Blast Tyrant is a particularly good one
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:17, Reply)
No,

I've got a couple of Butthole Surfers albums, and one (I think) RC album
I'll check the new one out. I do love their cover of "Do you think I'm sexy?".
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:15, Reply)
hahahaha LIES

(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:42, Reply)
Utter, utter lies.
Can't believe no-one pulled me up on it...
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 16:03, Reply)
You've hit on something that irritates me, there.
People (particularly film/programme makers) representing 1976/7 always make out that it was full of people sporting mohawks and wearing bin liners and bondage trousers, when it really, really was nothing like that.
The bit in the Great Rock n Roll Swindle (and it's the only bit worth watching) that cuts between the actual footage of the Sex Pistols on their trip down the Thames and the reconstruction of it, illustrates this perfectly.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:10, Reply)
It was only due to the death of wotsisname recently
That I found out how much of the Sex Pistols image was engineered. I have a pair of Sex Pistols boxers, officially licensed, which I bought from New Look for a few quid.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:14, Reply)
Heh. Mind you, I bought some Country Life butter the other day.

(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:17, Reply)
It's even more evident in Don Letts' superb ‘Punk Rock Movie’.
The original people were really inventive in their dress – by the time a ‘punk look’ was being marketed, and there were ‘punk nights’ in clubs etc the game was already up.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:35, Reply)
Rat Scabies, was my favourite member of The Damned, purely on the basis of his name.

(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 14:52, Reply)
The first Damned album was produced by Nick Lowe, if I remember correctly.
One of several splendid contributions he has made to music.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:01, Reply)
It's a masterpiece.
Streets ahead of The Clash's contemporaneous coil of dog faeces.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:02, Reply)
As far as debut 'punk' albums go
The Fall - Live at the Witchtrials is a definite contender. Still sounds fresh as fuck.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:33, Reply)
In other Fall news
There was a programme on last night with Simon Armitage tracing the origins of a poem which was in a (dare I say it) earthy Yorkshire dialect. At one point he went to a football match and they played "Kicker Conspiracy" as the background music. It's odd how you still get a kick out of hearing music that you liked but wasn't mainstream making it on to the telly.

My pal Nick
drummed for the Fall at Reading one year after Mark Smith fired their drummer an hour before their set.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 15:57, Reply)
To be fair, I don't think it's an official Fall gig if he doesn't fire, fight with, or marry one of the band.

(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 16:04, Reply)
I did a photo shoot in Brix Smith's house once.
She was wandering around topless at one point. I don't think she's all there.
(, Wed 18 Aug 2010, 16:07, Reply)
Spoken like a true raconteur
