I knew it was going to be slow but not this slow.
I've deleted stuff I don't need and then tried to download chrome which took ages. It's not working so I'm trying to delete it and download again. I've spent all day doing this.

I've deleted stuff I felt safe I knew I didn't need but there is probably more.
I'm just not sure what the other stuff is. I'm not comfortable doing what you suggested. I'm still waiting for chrome to uninstall. It doesn't seem to be doing anything.

What netbook did you go for?
The trick with them is to barebones it and _just_ use the web browser.... but that requires some techy knowledge that most people buying it wouldn't know how to do.

Give me the make and model and I'll see what it comes with so you know it's safe to remove.
There is something called MSConfig which lets you stop things running at start-up, so you only open them when you need them.... this is a great way of speeding up a machine.
