My general knowledge was that the angels were staying with Lot
and all the men from Sodom came out and demanded they come out so they could all bugger them, so Lot offered them his daughters instead.

Hence the buggery reference.

The men of Sodom asked for the angels to come out
not so that they could rape them just to offer violence, and be a bit nosy. The city was destroyed not just because of that, but becauses those same people had refused shelter to the angels earlier.

it's only used 3 times in the context of sexual intercourse
as opposed to several hundred other innocuous references. Also in the rare occasion it's used in a sexual manner, it doesn't have overtones of rape

Sodom may have partially been destroyed because of the rapiness of their inhabitants, but not because they threatened to rape angels. Otherwise there's an odd dearth of sources between 0th century- 9th century that associates Sodom with gayness

it's where the word Sodomy comes from yeah
but sodomy as a concept wasn't defined until well into the Middle Ages, and has basically been a catchall term for 'perversion' for a long long time. Lesbianism in the middle ages was sodomy, as was occasionally adulterous sex etc
