Awesome doesn't necessarily mean good. Look at Bush's 'Shock and awe'. Bombing the fuck out of loads of defenceless Arabs was awesome but still awful.

Being in a plummeting airliner whose wings have fallen off can be classed as thrilling and exciting. Though the brain-mashing certainty of being pulverised upon hitting the ground would probably distract you from saying "ooh, isn't this thrilling"
