This is a question The B3TA Detective Agency

Universalpsykopath tugs our coat and says: Tell us about your feats of deduction and the little mysteries you've solved. Alternatively, tell us about the simple, everyday things that mystified you for far too long.

Boats
I don't understand it. They're made of metal, right? Lots and lots of metal, generally quite heavy.

The thing is, metal isn't naturally buoyant! Try it yourself, drop some money in a glass of water and it'll sink to the bottom. (Probably best to use coins for this, paper doesn't illustrate it as well and gets all soggy and wet.) And that's just one coin (or more, depending on how many you've used).

So how is it that a big sodding great ferry thing* can manage to stay afloat, despite being much heavier than a 2p coin? Completely mystery.

*except the Herald of Free Enterprise of course

it's due to the earths magnetic field repelling the steel of the boat. The same reason why you can't take a boat to the south pole.

You can take a metal boat to the south pole
but only if you turn it upside down

i was told that you cant take a boat to the south pole because it is so heavey it would fall of the sea and land in the clouds

This is untrue -
you can't take it too the North Pole 'cause it will fall off the edge of the World. You can take a boat to the South Pole but you have to stay in Mawson's hut (where Santa goes on holiday when it's not Christmas) otherwise you could destabilise the whole Van Allen Belt.
Apparently shape has something to do with it too. Now if you'll excuse me I'm taking my disc for a sail on the river. Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
