Infocom in the 1980s sold a whole load of text adventure games (it was possible to sell them then). The cool thing was, the games came as a boxed set containing nifty toys called 'feelies'.
If I were to make more games along the lines of Hamlet (but bigger and cleverer), and make the games themselves free to go viral (as Hamlet did very quickly), but then sell little 'boxed sets' on eBay - containing the game on a CD, a hints booklet, and nifty things like (with Hamlet in mind): a little Skull of Yorick, "be"/"not be" carboard spinner, copy of "Elsinore Times"... would anyone be nerdy enough to buy them?*
I wouldn't hope to live on the profits or anything, but it would be cool to do if it wouldn't actually lose money (e.g. make N sets at a time at a cost of £2 each for me, and sell 'em for a fiver)
* I wouldn't actually do this for Hamlet as everyone's already seen that - that's just an example.
