I honestly don't see a way out,
the job market at the moment is absolutely flooded with people who have more experience than I do, and there are scarcely any jobs at all at the bottom end. I'm going to have to retrain in something to have any skills useful to anyone, goodness knows what.

Retraining isn't such a bad idea, I'm hearing from lots of people doing that kind of thing

If it's any consolation I'm supposed to have a Training Contract lined up with a firm already, and there's a severe drought of that going on, shitloads of firms are downsizing. After 5 years in higher education I'll still be doing something menial :(

I've cut bricks, packed crisps, sold crisps, answered phones, got a forklift licence, all sorts.
edit: for pretty much minimum wage, if not on the line itself

It's white collar central. Major banks and insurance companies. That sort of stuff is all out at Fife and Livingston. I'm not joking.

Plenty of those,
but that's really not something I'd be any good at... customer facing, nooo not me. This isn't me being fussy. I worked as a receptionist once and was utterly shit at it.
Besides, I've got a friend who's looking for exactly this kind of work, and has experience, and is having a pretty hard time of it.

You should try chasing these up more often,
maybe turn up in person. Also, follow the head of admin home one night and study their routine. If they go out to the pub quiz on a Wednesday evening, you could turn up over the course of a month and start up a conversation. When you're good friends after a few weeks, your employment status might crop up, whereupon you say "Funny you should mention that" and say how much you'd LOVE to work in their admin department, and the job's as good as yours.

Honestly, some people just don't make the effort.
