It also encourages a different approach to shopping. It’s very common for Americans to buy three different versions of something with the full intention of returning two of them. It’s regarded as a completely reasonable way to check things out properly at home. But like I said, there’s a retail cost, and there’s a hidden environmental cost due to transport, particularly when you get to the scale of Amazon, which handles tens of millions of returns a day.
