We want a cat but are a bit unsure about how to go about acquiring one - buy one for about £100, charity seems a bit judgmental, gumtree, meet a bloke in a pub then dodgy sale in the alley around the corner, find 'em in a hedge like porn mags in the olden days?
If you've got a cat how did you actually acquire yours?

It's the third cat I've had. First one was given to me because the owners decided they'd rather have a dog. Second one was given to me by my cousin, who decided that she was allergic to it. Third and current one was given to me by my best friend, when one of her cats had kittens. His little brother will be coming home with me next month.

He's a cantankerous old shit and is very much devoted to me and my provision of food, shelter and attention for him.

Brother and sister, the boy had a taste for rubber and every day brought us rubber bands, car and house window seals. The girl just wanted to sit on my lap. Best cats ever.
Do not buy one from a dealer. Cat dealers, like dog dealers, are scum. Do not get a 'pure' bred Nazi cat. Go to a charity, go and see each cat, let them pick you.

I encourage you to go to a local cat shelter.
