# I got one of my character models printed out in 3d.
'snice innit? Its wierd seeing something virtual become real.

Might paint it up, though if i cock it up, ive have pissed £200 down the drain.

# Awesome stuff!
Why/How did you go about that then?

# I collect figures from time to time
and ive always wanted to have a go at doing my own.

This site called shapeways.com takes your 3d models and (after you clean it up a bit first) it gets turned into a 3d plastic model of a size and material of your choosing. They even print in glass and metal.

Amazing stuff really.

This was how mine was made:

# Excellent
they modelled it on the one drawing?

I think it's lovely as it is unpainted.

# See the video on the above reply.
Its printed based on the 3d model i send them, layer by layer.

# Ah, but I don't see a link to any video?
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:15, archived)
# If it were that simple
I would have printed out a life-size Scarlett Johannson by now

:-D

EDIT - the video is in my reply to jimbuktu

# Looks nice!

you should paint it in smurf(ette) colours
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:12, archived)
# Really really good. That is all.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:15, archived)
# woah!
brilliant
get someone you trustto paint it, if you don't think you're up to it
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:16, archived)
# i reckon i could do a good job on it
and the cartoon colours mean that no shading is required. I just hope i dont make a mistake, or pick the wrong paints, so that it goes gloopy and bleedy.

The site has a useful painting guide though, so ill just follow that:

# phoarrr!
excellent work! get it painted professionally,
better still take it to the Games Workshop and get them to do it for free ;)

# i dont want to give those nerds the pleasure of dabbing her with their citadel paints!
It needs a nice, clear, clean paint job. I reckon i could handle it, providing i dont develop parkinsons in the meantime :-)
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:58, archived)
# That, sir, is at least
nineteen seperate kinds of incredible. Bravo!

Edit:
And more importantly, how would I go about acquiring one of these statuettes? I know of a young lady who would dearly love to own one!

# Fucking Awesome :D
Woo:D

# What about taking a latex mould copy of it first?
Then you can make plaster or resin duplicates to paint, and keep the original as the master.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:52, archived)
# I was thinking of that.
Dunno how good/ detailed the copies would be though, and im scared to fuck about with the original as it was so pricey.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 21:03, archived)
# It's surprisingly easy to get excellent results …
I'd ask the people who did the 3D printing if they've got any tips, and also if they've got any reject material you can practice on (different materials take to latex in different ways, so if you can test on the same material, so much the better).

The trickiest parts are (a) stopping the mould from deforming once you've taken it off the master, and (b) casting things with holes (like the gap between your model's arms and body).

Incidentally, I think it's fab what you've done :)

# If I could model
Shapeways would probably be owed all my organs and future children by now.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 22:05, archived)
# then model your organs, replace them with the plastic printed ones,
and voila - everyone is happy!
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 22:57, archived)
# This is fantastic...
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 6:59, archived)
# man, that's insane : D
I really wish I could do that.
nice work yet again fella

I wouldn't paint it. It look luvely as it is.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 16:11, archived)
# I think
It looks great in white, I would leave it as is personally
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 16:34, archived)
# Very nice
How big is it?
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 19:10, archived)
# Great modelling skills
but £200 seems a very premium price. Is it SLS or ZCorp? I'm guessing SLS if you plan to paint it (rather than print in colour). PM me if you plan on doing it again because as an alumni I can get great rates at the DMC in London.
