they're wedges, it even says it in the instructions.

my wife got me a new chess set for my birthday, however she doesn't play, so i've not had chance to try it out yet, i did attempt to teach my 4 y/o daughter, but she lost interest after about 5 minutes of me going over rules and showing her how pieces can move.
