Apparently the best time to see one is during nesting season. If a crow overflies the nest, they're like a black-and-yellow surface-to-air missle, streaking almost vertically to have a go.

A 'lifer' is the first time you've seen a species; a 'tick' is an entry on a list, be it year, life or trip list (as well as an arachnid that tends to appear on you when birding in rainforests a lot, the feckers); 'twitching' is running off to look at a bird someone else has reported. I could go on, but it's dull, even to birders.

Hoopoes? Faaaahhhhk, those are the best birds ever. I nearly soiled myself with glee when I saw one. The chap I was birding with and I nealry fell off of our bikes when we saw it and though he'd seen dozens of them in his life, he was jabbering and pointing as much as I was.
