# I loved jest set willy, mainly because that was on the BBC micro B
and nearly nothing but fake versions of big things were on that, except Chuckie Egg which was a fucking playgasm.

# One assumes you know of Oolite
www.oolite.org

Elite, basically, with heavily tarted-up graphics. Also, you can get every version of Elite that was ever released for free from Ian Bell's horrific website. Or at least you could. I just went and it appears he hasn't paid his server bills.

Plus, wiki.alioth.net/index.php/FFE_D3D Fuck this Elite bullshit, this is close to the real deal. Fuck yeah.

# Never heard of that...
Cheers for the tip :-) Ben playing X3 - Albion Prelude by Egosoft lately, very much in the Elite vein.

# Never heard of it, is it modern, old, in-between?
To be honest I still sometimes play Elite II on DOSBox, I love it way more than is healthy.

# The X series is very current.
Series started in about '98 with X, then X2 The Threat and onto X3 Reunion & Terran Conflict. They've just released X3 Albion Prelude and I think there's a new X4 out soon. very good space trading/fighting game - though a sapper of free time ;)

# Hmm
I seem to have little enough free time as it is. Might have to sit this one out until I'm unemployed or win the lottery.

# Jesus those covers make me so nostalgic
Actually playing them again is always a massive kick in the balls though. Things have gotten better.

# While I absolutely agree with you (at least up until the 16-bit era)
I was happily proving to myself the other day that I'm still incapable of playing How to be a Complete Bastard on the Speccy without turning myself into an oven and going round burning everything that won't smash with a hammer. Also, getting pissed and eating curry and farting at people.

# With you there...
Once settled down to an evening of nostalgic text adventures on a Beeb emulator... Went to bed very early that night - 'Go North_' just doesn't hold the same excitement anymore.

# I dunno, The Hobbit is still playable
although granted if I gave it to someone who'd never seen it when they were three they'd look at me like I'm a moron when I'm giggling at telling Thorin to climb into the chest and then shutting it on him to get the irritating twat out of the way.

# lol
Always remember the bit where you stray off the forest path and get killed by a spider. Never got bored of watching the graphics render line by line!
(, Wed 14 Mar 2012, 21:58, archived)
# Me neither :)
If "render" is the right word...

I also never got bored of getting out of the goblin's dungeon and immediately being captured and put back in the goblin's dungeon!

This post may contain lies.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2012, 22:02, archived)
# I guess 'Render' as in 'Rendering a wall...'
Also seem to remember a bit where you have to run through some tunnels near where Gollum is, weird thing is I remember it being really hectic! Frantic "Go left" "go right" king of thing. So hectic in a Mavis Beacon kind of way.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2012, 22:06, archived)
# that's the place
it's frantic because around the next corner you could meet the nasty goblin and not have time to kill him, landing you back in the cell to wander lost until you happen by chance upon the way out

i almost always skipped that - the only time i beat the game i didn't go anywhere near the goblin's dungeons. try as i might though i can't do it again, i just get into the same loop of being captured when i'm in the elves' dungeons
(, Wed 14 Mar 2012, 22:39, archived)
# That'll be it then.
I might have to dig out an emulator and play it again, will set my expectations low enough not to be disappointed ;-)
(, Wed 14 Mar 2012, 22:42, archived)
# Set them lower
I don't care how low your expectations are. Set them lower.

Also, get a C64 (or Speccy, but the C64 version is a bit superior) and get "Valhalla". Then entertain yourself telling Thor to throw his armour and weapons at Loki. Eventually he'll twig and refuse, so just give him money and start again. Good times will be had by all.
