Aye.They reckon it's because the owl has such mega-featherage it contains lots of dust and stuff, so when they slam into glass they leave this ghostly imprint behind.

Or etch it into the glass itself.An artist friend did that with her avian window imprints: remove the picture window; carefully acid-etch the imprint for posterity; remount the glass.
Pigeons are very stupid; they finally stopped attempting to fly through the glass after the 4th(!) etched imprint. You'd think they'd learn before then what those pale blotches signified.

I had one of a starling once on the patio door.The dust print was so precise you could actually make out the nostrils on the beak.
I'm guessing it's a mixture of dust and feather oils.

We had that happen a lot at the home on Maui.Never with owls, however. Pigeons would attempt to fly through the spotless picture window on the kitchen side of the house and leave behind those imprints. I found it hilarious the feet were always splayed out in front of the bird, as if at the last instant it realized there was a barrier there and was frantically attempting to brake before the inevitable THUD.
The strange bit was I witnessed 5 of them while I was washing stuff at the sink; you'd expect them to make a run when there weren't any witnesses present.
Hilarious comic strip, btw. I'm going to show it to the aforementioned artist friend and enjoy witnessing her reaction.
