Adaware is a lovely free program by Lavasoft that clears all that sort of shit out.

Get the latest google toolbar to protect you from popups and never click OK to anything, and you shouldn't get anything else.

If adaware doesn't work, I find Spybot - Search and Destroy to be quite good too.
