# Advice needed!
I have a nasty rash on my belly stretching down to my ba...

No, actually I happen to have about £900 and am looking for a decent new PC. Can anyone suggest a good place to look, other than Dixon/Currys/Dell et al?

Also any suggestions for a good web host as mine is quite frankly arse-juice. Say under £50 a year...

# apart from
going to dell(where you'll get a good deal and a nice pc) I suggest making it yourself. Way cheaper.

# [Shudder]
Not sure if I'm ready for that kind of responsibility...

# whoa
they are expensive!!

www.pcindex.co.uk

very good price comparison - but komplette are pretty much cheapest atm

# Agreed
I'd recommend anyone thinking of getting a new PC to build it themselves - out of eggs and carpet fluff if possible.

Alfie you got that email yet?
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:34, archived)
# not yet,
Ive been messing about with flying v's and carvaggios, hang on...

Sorry that sounded a bit twatty I'm just excited about having my wallpaper on your site :)
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:09, archived)
# actually
I'm not sure it is that much cheaper.
It is cheaper than getting ripped-off at Currys, but there are plenty of cheap PC builders.
I wouldn't recommend building your own PC to someone who doesn't have any experience with hardware.
I know it isn't that difficult, but if you hit a problem, a novice wouldn't know how to sort it out.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:50, archived)
# dixons? currys?
what the hell are you thinking of man

*slaps face*

youth of today, too lazy to build your own. Tut! i suggest building yourown, unless you don't want to tinker about with lots of electronics.

depends on what you want the machine for, tattyswaping?, games machine?, or hardened exhell user?

# Mostly making music
But S'gotta be a pretty generic one so as my better half, who also controls the purse strings, can use it for her Nursing degree...
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:36, archived)
# hummmmm....
your gonna wanna have a nice big hard drive(maybe 2, so you can keep your music stuff away from the misses), a good deal of ram, and a nice 'n' quick processor (i say, steer clear of the celeron, i say)

check evesham or mesh or dabs or insite or if you know someone in the trade Micro-P.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:44, archived)
# Tell me about it...
... Got a 500mh p3 Dell that actually cries when I'm making tunes at the moment. Greedy music software, phat .wav samples - Arrrghhh. Need new pc quick, but not enough time to actually make one myself...
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:50, archived)
# also,
get a decent soundcard with low latency if you're making music - get a hammerfall if you you have too much money ;-)

oh, and make sure the harddrive's nice and fast.

# i am on supanames
paying about £35 a year, enough space php pop3email etc, no audio or video files though

try www.novatech.co.uk for your computer
or www.dabs.com
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:33, archived)
# novatech are shite
try pcindex.co.uk for parts

and eversham micros for full systems

# Couldnt recommend savastore ...
... I bought a "custom" Aries off their website. Took them 5 weeks to eventually deliver (Parts marked as "In stock" on the site were actually out of stock IRL). When the guy delivered it, he said "I'll be back" - and he was - 5 days later to have the RAM replaced. Oh, and driver discs missing. Dodgy USB Ports. Cheap though, but you did say you wanted one in a hurry ...
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:27, archived)
# you could build a very good one
for that money if you can be bothered to do the research and aren't fussed about warranties and support.

I often buy bits from www.dabs.com
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:33, archived)
# Dabs
Are quite expensive www.scan.co.uk are cheap but their customer service sucks monkey cock.
Personally I'd recommend www.komplett.co.uk they are the best I have used and I'm a hardware whore.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:37, archived)
# I have a local place in Glasgow
www.infiniti.co.uk they are pleasingly cheap, and there is a face to throw any broken stuff back at.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:43, archived)
# Build it
its easy. You can make up a system for a few sheckles, and you then know how to fix it if need be, and upgrade.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:39, archived)
# Thanks all
For the handy hints. I'll check it all out.

Anyone know what the MAXX pcs from special reserve are like?
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:44, archived)
# ha ha ha
i used to work for them

the PC are ok, what one were you looking at?
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:47, archived)
# The
MAXX P4 2400 with Soundblaster Audigy [Drool]. Just out of my price range, but a few bank jobs and a night down the dogs should sort that out...

Or maybe tapping up the parents...
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:00, archived)
# you really could build the same spec machine`
cheaper yourself.

look in all the pc mags at the moment (PC PLUS has one in this month) and they will tell you what you need to put a machine together properly.

if you want a serious sound card for music making i suggest that you take a look at this or for the cheaper option try the STAudio DSP24V from here
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:14, archived)
# I Concur
The Soundblaster cards although quite nice for gaming aren't really a patch on most of the proper audio cards - your much better off buying something designed primarily for music rather then gaming.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:18, archived)
# Thanks Thor SonofOdin
You've been very kind, always thought you'd be very gruff and nordic. But you've been very helpful :)

Wait a minute! Your not really a norse god of thunder are you?

# yes i am
don't anger me or i will have to smite you
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:29, archived)
# Eeeek!
[Runs for cover, trips, gets up, runs some more]
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:34, archived)
# ok i'll let you off this time
but do check out the STAudio24V, it is a class card and not too expensive.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 15:43, archived)
# If you're building your own (recommended)
try overclockers.co.uk at least of the mobo/CPUs (dunno what their prices are like compared to the ones mentioned above for everything else though)
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:45, archived)
# Overclockers
Customer service is even worse then Scans.
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:50, archived)
# i'll
second that

they were ok, but have gone downhill for some reason
(, Thu 21 Nov 2002, 14:57, archived)
