# what sort of horror? evil dead horror, cannibal holocaust horror or hammer horror?
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:17, archived)
# not that fussed, But I do prefer the subtle sort (Orphanage was good)
a good zombie movie never goes amiss... Rec was awesome...
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:22, archived)
# i've not seen that one yet.
not a horror movie but one that i recommend nonetheless, "City of lost children". french gothic fairy tale by jean pierre jeunet.
also I am Omega is worth checking out. very very low budget version of I am legend. but actually really quite clever in its own way.
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:27, archived)
# city of lost children is cocking phenomenal
but make sure you get the original language version... I got the english one by mistake. There is something worse about dubbed films when they're dubbed in English accents.

not as grand as the Ichi the Killer cockney gangster dubbing though.
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:32, archived)
# i've got the french one but it has the dubbed one as an extra
the dubbing isn't actually that bad on it i thought. obviously the french one is better though

# Hammer produced 'The Devil Rides Out' a brilliant little film
where Christopher Lee plays the good guy for a change
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:27, archived)
# aye, thats a great one
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:30, archived)
# The Hammer stuff is on 4OD atm!
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:30, archived)
# do you like your horror movies bloody and gory, or more 'inferred, and more creepy'?
general ideas would include:

Dagon
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (yes, not the original, the remake has very little incidental music, and the shocks when they come aren't built up with music, makes it much more effective)
Saw I & II, beyond that, don't bother, it's only gore filler
The original Halloween is also a good one
The Dawn of the Dead remake is excellent
perhaps something like Outpost may also appeal

and if they have it, The Orphanage. A very good film.

(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:18, archived)
# probably the creepy subtle sort. Although I do like a bit of gore
edit: hmmm.. I always get fussy when it comes to remakes, but I might try TCM then...

Dawn of the Dead and Orphanage were excellent
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:20, archived)
# did you see channel 4's
"dead set"? Twas quite good, and probably on DVD by now.
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:30, archived)
# yeah, had to get it on day of release due to missing the last two eps...
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:32, archived)
# A few years back, me an the better half decided to go to the flicks...
little realising it was Halloween and horror movies would no doubt be on. Deciding against going for something
'nicer' we opted for the Texas Chainsaw remake, both expecting it to be fairly mundane hokum.
The cinema was packed, mainly with teenagers and young couples etc, so I was expecting nothing more than popcorn horror fodder.
it was the only time I've been to the cinema where the lights came up at the end and nobody said a word, there was complete silence as everyone shuffled out, all a bit stunned by the film.
the lack of incidental music made the 'shocks' just that little more brutal when they did come, as you weren't prepared for them by the inclusion of 'suspense' music.
It's not a classic horror, but it does deliver when it needs to.

also, pick up Dagon if you can, fairly humdrum horror hokum, good story, and has one of the nastiest special effects jobs
in a horror movie I've seen
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:31, archived)
# Don't forget Bad Taste!
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:24, archived)
# not exactly 'classic' horror, is it though

(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:27, archived)
# I saw one about six months ago but i can't remember the name
I only remember it coz it had the best dying words of a baddie ever.

'I think it's sorta, er, oh.'

That was it, it was Zombarella.

# Perfect Blue (psychological anime horor thing)
it depends if by really good you mean trashy amusing shlock or genuinely scary?

EDIT: Time Crimes.. although I'm not sure if that's released in this country yet.

Dance of the Dead (terribly titled hysterical zombie horror comedy hting)

Living Dead atthe Manchester Morgue (spanish zombie film set in the lake district.. has nothing to do with manchester)

Tetsuo: the iron man

Gozu.
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:22, archived)
# Hmmm... never saw Perfect Blue....
I prefer genuinely scary, but I sometimes go for the crazy gore nonsense...
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:24, archived)
# bottom two are crazy nonsense.
especially gozu.

Perfect Blue is very good. not a tentical in sight.

# Tetsuo does sound good...
(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 12:31, archived)
# if you can take the mental japanese
