# Thanks all.
In marked contrast to every other day of the year I will be celebrating with a hangover at work and being shouted at for no reason by a load of cunts I hate.

# could someone please explain
How that film got 9 Oscar nominations?

I'm very confused, given that it was (imho) a load of old pants.
(, Wed 17 Feb 2010, 10:27, archived)
# Because in some other peoples' opinion it was outstanding
If it doesn't win Best Picture I'll blow up my car
(, Wed 17 Feb 2010, 10:29, archived)
# Outstanding? really?
In what way did it stand out for you?

I'm not looking to start an argument here, or call into question your judgement. I'd genuinely like to know what you saw in it that I, and the people I watched it with missed.
(, Wed 17 Feb 2010, 10:37, archived)
# Hey I didn't say it was outstanding for me.
I quite liked it, I was entertained, but it wasn't brilliant.

It's definitely the grittiest war film for a while though, but it went beyond that as well.. It was incredibly tense and at times breathtaking. And if you like that sort of thing it's probably quite good. The characters weren't particularly likable and didn't really go anywehere, which is why I don't think it's outstanding, but I enjoyed it a lot.
(, Wed 17 Feb 2010, 10:43, archived)
# Perhaps the tension was something I missed
I'd just watched Inglorious Bastards, and the incredibly tense beer cellar scenes may well have taken the edge off.

I'd agree with you on the characters though. And perhaps go further. they came across as downright irritating to me, and I kept hoping for them to get blown up at the end. I honestly don't think I would even have picked up on the polt driver of the guy in charge being an adrenalin junkie, if it hadn't said so on the box. He just came over as a nob head :P
(, Wed 17 Feb 2010, 10:50, archived)
# Christ yeah, Inglourious Basterds is a much better film
I don't think I've ever felt so immediately involved in a film as I did with that first scene, with the jews under the floorboards and the guys above talking in German. Goddamn.

# Very brave to use so much subtitling
but it pays off in spades.
