honestly..who listens to it?
You might like to start with Radio Four, experiment with Radio Two, give Radio Three a bash and go on from there.

I like Radio 3, their output is actually fairly diverse
I knew Radio 2 had gone all wrong when I heard Dale Winton introducing the Sisters of Mercy

I only get to listen to the radio in the car
Radio 1 is for kids and idiots
Radio 2 has some good bits but mostly for fogies
Radio 3 - oh do fuck off
Radio 4 - great for news and comedy but no music
Commercial stations - utter tosh with adverts

I have no idea what's going on in the music world apart from what I read in the papers

but they don't pronounce the ethnic thing in the ridiculous way that minority broadcasting does.. I can hardly imagine John Humphrys announcing a season of programs on being white :)

What with 90% of the population being white.

I like Asian music. They do things with chromatic scales that defy comprehension.

and then quietly cut its funding so it dies of it's own accord.
There was a marvellous outburst on the Fail the other day with a guy banging on about there's all these specialist BBC radio stations:
"There's a welsh one, a Scottish one, no bloody English one though, is there?"
No there isn't... just lots of little regional ones, which cover far smaller areas than wales and Scotland.

5 live and sports extra is one too many surely?
Radio 4 and 7 are both books and plays and stuff.
Seems a bit stupid to say new music is important and kill off Radio 6
And its hard to believe that the Asian network is short of listeners

It's usually used for football (which is also playing on the relevant local station) and long sports events like the tennis matches.
It's got a place, but it could just as easily be internet only.
Radio 7 seems pointless now because of the iPlayer, and the amount of old stuff avaialble on there.
Asian Network is slightly trickier to defend, because there are so many commercial asian stations in the areas it would be listened to.
One of its bods was on % Live yesterday saying it provides a great deal of documentaries and drama, that commercial stations wouldn't be able to provide, but surely these should be covered by the mainstream anyway?
6music, to me, has only one realistic competitior in XFM (which is now so utterly shit it makes me want to listen to Absolute), but that's regional. So for people in Cornwall, or whereever, it is one of the only outlets for new music they've got.

I used to drive from Acton to Slough every day for work, with the signal slowly fading as I got closer to Slough
some might say that the same effect applies to a lot of things
