I feel that we need to have a "how-to" guide for new users

instead of just suggesting that they read the faq, request that they look at the "beginners guide to b3ta" which would have everything they need to know in a few short paragraphs. its my experience that most people just look at one item in the faq at a time, ie, "aha thats how to post a link to my picture" then they get sent back to the faq, "aha, thats how i put an image instead of a link" then they get sent back again, "aha, i can't post from geocities, etc, but I can use MSN groups"
if people read through the FAQ completely, it would be fine, but no one does, so we need something in its place.

THE ABOVE IS IN NO WAY MEANT TO BE MEAN TO THE NEW MEMBER POSTING ABOVE, I just thought now would be a god time to voice my opinion

it removes the count, it didn't always do that so i've posted a lot more posts really if you take that into account.

i can never tell how it appears to other people

for a start my monitor is normal to me but displays things dark so what i see is ok but may be too light for other people, also gifs in IE on my comp may be totoally different for other comps/browsers etc, so does it flutter smoothly?
