Serious question
Why can one MP stop this? Can he not be overruled or the bill put to a vote?

I don’t understand how PMBs work exactly but I seem to recall Chope being one of the MPs that filibustered out the bill that would have mandated minimum standards for rented properties.
Unsurprisingly Mogg was one of the others.

The whole place is ripe for reform but no-one wants to do it
Instead we get brexit

Anything to do with the fact that many MPs are Landlords themselves?
Out of touch and out for themselves. Just so so fucking depressing that so little has really progressed and in fact we are now going backwards

I imagine so.
You know something stinks when MPs mention the register of financial interests before they speak instead of just saying something like “I’m a landlord”. In fairness though, a lot of MPs are landlords because many rent out their constituency homes when they rent in London.

As it's been explained to me
it's a parliamentary all party agreement / procedural thing that if no-one says 'object' then it goes through to the next phase without debate. If someone like Chope chimes in , it must then be debated....
Of course it will go through eventually. Chope just has a reputation for wanting even no-brainers debated as much as possible and he wants a chat about something that will bang people up for a couple of years.
In this instance, this is mainly because he is a cunt.

He's a procedure fanny
No chance of getting any real public support for his batshit agenda so he resorts to the arcane stuff to get some attention

He comes across a an angry, thwarted, control freak who is trashing stuff because he can.

He has a daughter

It seems he's a serial cunt

I know it's childish and reductive to make personal comments, but he looks like a real cunt. A really, really nasty piece of work. The only hope is that there's a tiny part of his brain that realizes what his life's missing; some tiny, nagging feeling of shame and unhappiness.

Aparently it's a matter of principle for him so any private members bill has to be debated before it becomes law.

It will become law regardless
Chope just thinks every bill should be debated before made law. This kind of thinking should protect us from nonsense laws, you would think, so how come nonsense laws like the Psychoactive Substances Act still get passed. The act was designed to restrict sale and supply of "legal highs" but which, it was pointed out, could also include almost every substance that affects the brain. Alcohol, painkillers, coffee...
Reform the arcane laws and solve the problem. The UK could do with a decent reformist PM

How come he submits so many PMBs then?

That statement should be in quotes, it was not me wot said it
I just riffed on it
However I don't see the conflict between prolific PMB submission and the fact that he likes to debate every bill.

If it's done through the ballot, every bill he presents stops another MP presenting theirs.
Somehow I get the feeling that even he doesn't expect things like abolishing the TV license fee to get very far.
