The fastest I've crashed is around 30mph. And that was onto gravel with a full face helmet on.
50mph in nothing but some lycra and a road helmet directly into rigging is inconceivable.

in terms of what solid metal objects hit where, but it looked like he took the crash barrier directly to his face. Horrible.

Depends how the investigation goes.
Also I think there's an argument for the law getting involved here. That looked so far outside the limits of what should be acceptable in a competitive sport.

It is plain he forced him to crash so he couldn't overtake.
It should be treated like any other deliberately caused accident that results in serious injury.
You shouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing in a race.
