This is a link post Toys!
Yes, I know it's an advert. It's for the next wave of over-priced LEGO Dimensions character/level unlock packs. But the licensing cross-over gags they've squeezed into this short trailer (all genuinely signed-up) are nothing short of brilliant.

This is a normal post unbelievably overpriced
£100 when it launched and that only gives you access to 25% of the disk's contents, another £250 to play the rest
If they had any sympathy for the average parent they'd have a simple Toy controller on/off mode, so it could be played like normal Lego games as well.

This is a normal post All Lego products are massively overpriced
Electronic or otherwise.

I'm sure that wasn't always the case, was it?

My parents were perpetually skint and I had loads of the stuff.

Certainly the sets have become a lot cheaper in real terms. However, they have shifted from a wide variety of smaller sets in the past to now just one set at each of their target price points in each theme. Along with a bit of a markup when it's a licensed set like Star Wars.

I mean, if you actually take the holy grail of 1980, the 928 Space Cruiser, and hold one in your hands, it's not really all that big and would probably only retail today at about £60. Compared to around £20 over thirty years ago that's pretty good going.

The difference is that nowadays that would only be the mid-range space toy and the massive collector's Death Star or whatever next to it costing some £300 makes it look like something out of a Kinder egg in comparison.

And the likes of Toys'R'Us always prefer to stock the big-box items as they're easier to stock manage and make more profit. That can warp a parents' view of the product. It's also why LEGO don't make many trains any more, sadly, as no-one will stock smaller add-on sets...

You used to buy it in very small amounts, one car's worth etc. Is it only in big set-piece boxes now?

I remember the ages it took saving up the six quid needed to buy the police station.

This is a normal post Depends where you shop.
If you don't have an actual brand store near you, you might be stuck with Toys'R'Us, who only want to sell big boxes. Large supermarkets tend to stock the smaller stuff, but never have the full range.

If you look closely, you'll see one or two of the bigger boxes in Toys'R'Us are actually three separate smaller sets, still in their own boxes, stuffed into one bigger cardboard carton or shrink-wrapped into a bundle.

This is a normal post I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Down the right-hand side of the extra side bit,
on the left just before the U-bend and the bubble clock. Use the multi-storey next to Debenhams and you're directly above it.
