The M62 had to be built around that farmhouse near Rishworth Moor and just to piss him off, they built it either side rather than serving a court order, getting the police to drag him out and then bulldoze his house.

To be honest, building it around someone who refuses to move is also a bit of a "fuck you, we don't need to buy your house when we can devalue it".

As a person of local disposition to that farm, i've previously done some reading on the construction of the M62 around here.

Yes, sad, I know, but anyway...

Whilst the owner did chose not to sell the farm and land, the motorway route didn't actually change. Apparently, due to the lay-of-the-land, the motorway was always going to split and rejoin roughly where it does now.

It's that farmer's relatives i feel sorry for (if he/she has any).

This is true
as can be shown by the fact that it happens again about a mile further west. It's the lie of the land. I imagine because it was more cost effective to do that than buy the house and demolish it, and then try to create a level foundation to lay the road on.

If they wanted him out, they would have just kicked him out like what happened to some old couple in Lincolnshire when they built a bypass.

things would have been slightly different if the M62 was being built today!

Actually, come to think of it, if the M62 was being built today, it may have taken a completely different route - there'd have been so many eco-warrior on the case trying to prevent the destruction of so many hills etc.

If you want to avoid the Pennines altogether, you can go all the way up the A65 past Skipton, round the edge of the Dales and the Forest of Bowland, go left at Ingleton, then join the M6 and go south.

There are a few about.
This one's just outside Bedford. The flats were built 40-odd years ago and the owner of this one shop wouldn't move. It would be a bit gutting knowing your house/shop was being pulled down just to make a grass verge look a bit prettier I suppose.

I hate to spoil a good story, but
the way the motorway runs is due to geology.

The Dept of Transport can build roads wherever they like. This is because you technically cannot own land in the UK - you just get to borrow it from the Queen for a while. They'll build the motorway and do the paperwork afterwards. That's what my friend told me, and he works for the Land Registry.
