Can someone explain to me...
...what 'Blue Sky Thinking' actually means?
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 15:04, 15 replies)
I always assumed
it meant having no limit to what you might think about - no roof on your office.... I used to know someone who was in a 'blue sky' research group and had the remit and budget to do research into anything he thought was interesting. Anything.

But having a 'glass ceiling' is bad, right?
I'm confused.

Unfortunately, yes.
Blue sky thinking is really just a way of thinking about a problem and coming up with ideas/solutions regardless of any potential barriers these appear to have. Once you've got all your ideas, you can then set about getting rid of those that are completely stupid, keeping the ones that are maybe a bit stupid but possibly have some merit, and all the non stupid suggestions too.

Quite why nobody just casts aside the totally stupid suggestions in the first place I don't know.
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 15:14, closed)
well
the reason is that a stupid suggestion may spark off a sensible one. I was very dubious about all this but then I attended a brainstorming meeting which was run by a 'professional brainstormer'. He was very strict about recording everything, no matter how bizarre an idea, and sure enough some of the weirdest ideas did end up inspiring someone else to come up with a sensible idea. If it's well managed then it works well. If it's not managed then, yeah, it's daft.

You do realise that brainstorming is taboo these days?
For fear that it upsets the epileptics...
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 15:41, closed)
I believe 'thought shower'
Is the acceptable, pc alternative
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 15:45, closed)
I thought it was
"Mind piss"
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 15:48, closed)
I believe I've covered the acceptable replacement....

(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 16:00, closed)
it's a bit like this....
Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' ev'rybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day hey,hey

Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mister blue sky is living here today hey, hey

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration, mister blue sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for

Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you

Mister blue sky, mister blue sky
Mister blue sky

Mister blue, you did it right
But soon comes mister night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you
