This is a question Crap Gadgets

We wanted a monkey butler and bought one off eBay. Imagine our surprise when we found it was just an ordinary monkey with rabies. Worse: It had no butler training at all. Tell us about your duff technology purchases.

Thanks to Moonbadger for the suggestion

When we moved two years ago
We got a new telly with built in freeview.

For some reason it won't pick up Film4 or ITV4, and the local BBC news is from Newcastle and Cumbria rather than Leeds/York.

I've re-tuned it half a dozen times but no change.

Any ideas b3tans?

I'm sorely tempted at times
but don't want to miss the final of 'Great British Bake Off'.

You might be able to fine tune the channels in the settings, or even pick the
broadcast mast if there is more than one. I think they're named, but you'd have to play around and some tellies don't give you the option.

Try the Digital Spy forums, there are loads of TV tech spods there. As usual, pretend to be a woman and they'll be even more helpful.

Just make your mssus bake a cake whilst you make disparaging comments.
It'll be the same AND you can eat the cake.

It's tonight!!
I can barely chuffin' wait.

Hm
The local news thing really is just a tuning thing I'm sure - when I moved to Leicester my room-mate's TV picked up East Midlands Today while mine was still happy showing Midlands Today until I retuned it. Dunno about the other channels though :/

Film4 & ITV4?
they're shit anyway

and Cumbria
is prettier than Leeds, so all in all, i don't see the problem.
(, Thu 29 Sep 2011, 16:01, closed)
Yeah but...
York is considerably nicer than Newcastle.

ITV4 has Batman on it though.
This is win in my book.

Your ariel is pointing at the wrong transmitter.
You might need a new ariel, but point the existing one the right way first. If the path to the transmitter is obstructed, you might need to mount it on a long pole, but you'll be getting into new ariel territory, then, anyway.

When I lived in Luton, we had London as our local stations, rather than Eastern, as we got better reception by pointing at the "wrong" transmitter.

My apologies.
I must have OD'd on Disney Princesses.

Just get Sky

(, Thu 29 Sep 2011, 16:25, closed)

All the Freeview channels are broken up into multiplexes (i.e. blocks of channels) broadcasting at different frequencies and you seem to be missing one. I'm guessing you're picking up this transmitter:

www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=SD660144

So you'll also be missing Yesterday and 4Music. Most probably cause is if your antenna is an old one, it may not pick up all frequencies - see if you can try a retune with an indoor antenna and it might pick it up. If it does, you'll probably as well to get a professional in and get him to point a new antenna (on your roof/in your loft) at the Emley Moor transmitter.

Thanks all
Will try some of this, but as we rent now I'm not bothered enough to pay for a telly man to fix it.

I'll give it a go and then just MTFU.

Move to Cumbria.

I'm too 20th Century to want Sky
We've already got enough shit telly to not watch without adding dozens of more crap.

But thanks anyway.

For nothing.

Get Virgin Media

^This^
Sky is run by nasty people who hack phones, not nice beardy ones who fly balloons.
(, Fri 30 Sep 2011, 16:28, closed)
^^FFS
They didn't hack phones... they accessed insecure voicemail boxes!

Sorry, not directed at due but at the bloody media/brain dead public who won't want to know the difference.
