People who complain they don't receive enough dole money to even live hand to mouth on, when they actually do receive decent money, and all they waste it on booze and fags etc, leaving them- surprise surprise- without enough cash for the basics.
Such persons then often turn futher towards the welfare state and force taxpayers to subsidize their irresponsible lifestyle even more handsomely.

EDIT- This isn't a rant against the 90% of decent, work-hungry people on the welfare state, they are honorable social group. This is against the minority of people who knowingly waste their income and then try to push the consequences onto others. Anecdotally, everyone seems to know several people who could perfectly well but choose not to.

Don't get me wrong I'm not happy about abuse of the welfare system, but I don't understand how you think it costs more to pay money to someone who spends their money on booze and fags rather that food.

Surly, begrudging petty hitlers in the Dole office threatening withdrawal of benefits or referral to a 'decision maker' EVERY TIME I SIGNED ON. Changing appointments specifically so I had to waste two hours before and an hour after due to bus timetables. Offers of warehouse work when I either couldn't get there or back due to aforementioned bus timetables. No help with either council tax or rent(they lost the forms - twice and said I had to apply again from the date I complained).
I had been paying the thick end of a grand deductions for the last five years and significantly more on occasion before that. My 'decent money' from the state for all this frickin' about - £67.50/week.

Having lived for a couple of years"on the jam roll"
*Both my missus and myself after our daughter was born - for different reasons & out of our control*
We paid our mortgage (fixed rate), paid all of our bills, fed our selves, clothed ourselves - including nappies for the bub (how un-PC of us!) & still found money so I could enjoy a beer (not my fave tipple but amber fluid non-the-less), the missus could enjoy a regular (not-quite-paint-stripper) wine. I smoke about a pack of cigs a week so we should include them.
We certainly didn't live like kings, but we survived. It can be done.
In my "working lifetime" so far I estimate I have paid about AUD$40,000 in taxes. My missus & I on benefits for just over a year & a half cost a little over $9000. We will be both "self-funded" retirees eventually.
Welfare works if you aren't addicted to a drug, over 35 with a family & mortgage or have mongy children.

What pissed me off about the nay-sayers here is the idea that a lot of them haven't had their job taken away from them (with little or no remuneration) and then had to go for even the shittiest of jobs to be turned down again & again.
If you work for a financial institution and aren't sucking the bosses cock then you could well be next.
