Movies you thought would be shit but actually weren't. Or the opposite.
I recently watched The Runaways, and I thought it would be shit, but I quite liked it.
I don't care if you disagree. Kristen Stewart looks great in tight leather pants.

Alt: Music you're now into?
Flogging Molly is new for me, I listened to a shit ton of their music last week.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 17:57, 118 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I'd like to see that Runaways film.
Joan Jett used to give the right fucking horn.

I thought 'In Bruges' as going to be fucking awful but I liked it a lot.

Alt: My pal and I discovered a magnificent old reggae chatter called 'Nigger Kojak' a week or so back. He's excellent.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:04, Reply)
Joan Jett ?
I'd have much rather spent time with Heather Thomas from The Fall Guy.

The Silver Jews
At the moment, I can only listen to mad folk music. Sometimes some of their stuff wonders a little too far into country, which I can't really listen to without getting heartburn.

Oh and lashings of Devendra Banheart a little Regina Spektor and some Type O Negative, just because I'm single and I can listen to whatever I feel like.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:06, Reply)
that's not heartburn, it's heartache
you know what you get when you play a country song backwards?

I seem to have a thing for
bands I really shouldn't at the moment like NIN and Korn. I even found myself enjoying LinkinPark. I don't have any clue why. I may need professional help
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:14, Reply)
They were listening to some music channel called skunge or skank or something over the weekend, and I found I enjoyed most of their songs.
I like Linken Park's stuff, have you heard of "The Offspring" ? They have some good songs you might like.

I own a couple of offspring albums
I'm no stranger to this genre, it's just I thought I'd grown out of it a bit

I've actually just got into Joan Jett in a major way.
I've always liked her but recently I've been right into it.

I thought The Butterfly Effect was going to be whiny and shit but it was actually excellent.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:18, Reply)
That movie gets slated a hell of a lot but I enjoyed it
and it gets pretty dark in places.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:20, Reply)
I hated the bit with the dog in the bag.

(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:22, Reply)
I haven't watched it from beginning to end, but what I saw sort of freaked me out a bit
also hated that bit with the dog
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:37, Reply)
I had to admit that "The 40-Year Old Virgin" was not the predictable, mirthless pile of tosh its crass title and bold red-font poster suggested it would be
It actually made me laugh, even in spite of the cast including Seth Fucking Rogen.

Alt: I saw two good gigs last week - Ian Siegal was on excellent form once again, but I knew he would be. St Jude were better than I expected, having been a bit indifferent toward their album. (This is in no way connected with what amazing thighs their singer has.)
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:20, Reply)
Where did you see St Jude?
I quite like their album, but it's not as good as I was hoping it would be.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:31, Reply)
They played The Borderline last Wednesday
(First time I'd been there as well, incidentally)
My friend was telling me they've blamed the production on the album not sounding as good as they hoped. Or something like that. They certainly translated better for me in a live setting.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:38, Reply)
I was hoping for a lot more having heard Soul on Fire
but the rest of the album just sounded a bit meh and didn't really grab me. I'll keep listening and see if it grows on me.

I like the Borderline, I saw Pete Murray there a while back.

Shawshank Redemption is one of the most
boring, wanky, over rated snoozefests ever and it tops a lot of my friends best film ever lists. Stupid cunts.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:27, Reply)
I've never watched it. But I imagine it makes a lot of peoples lists, along with Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, The Princess Bride, It's a Wonderful Life
Star Wars, etc etc etc
movies that I have not seen and don't want to because I imagine they're exactly as you've just described Shawshank Redemption

The most recent album is a return to form.
Loved the first one, didn't understand the second one, love this one. She plays all my chords.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:31, Reply)
I don't get how you could not like the second album if you liked the first?
I liked them both. She was pretty good live too.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:32, Reply)
Dunno, I think I went into it expecting too much.
I hate having expectations. Perhaps I'll give it another go. I'd like to see her live. I'd quite like a lock of her hair too.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:35, Reply)
I'd like to keep her in a box in the cupboard under my stairs
and I'd get her out at parties and make her crawl around the floor and I'd put bowls of raw meat at either end of the room and make her crawl as quickly as she could between them or she wouldn't be allowed any and if she tried to stand up I'd have a fagoot of birch twigs ready to give her a damn good thrashing.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:38, Reply)
I'd like to be invited to more of your parties.

(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:40, Reply)
That would be fun, I could do with someone to keep in my shed.

it was fantastic though.

Alt: this made me look at the songs added to my Spotify playlist recently and do a sad face. In the last three days songs have been added (one of each) by the artists: Samuel Barber, Nagual Sound Experiment, New York Dolls, Kris Allen, Sex Pistols and Kevin Sullivan.

FUCK YEAH!
I could come and stay with you and I could give Echo a big cuddle and I could go and watch the show, because I know you don't like concerts, and then we could drive up to Lookout Point and we could make out until the sun came up.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:42, Reply)
I do, DO like concerts, just not country concerts and/or going to concerts for bands I don't like or have no interest in seeing.
So, yeah, you can go by yourself to that one.
As well as Lookout Point. Or you could take Echo. She'll probably make out with you.
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 19:18, Reply)
I just have 'I need to know'
I have no idea why.

On my second playlist (I only have two playlists) I appear also to have recently added a Good Charlotte song, some Iggy & The Stooges, as well as some more electro stuff
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:40, Reply)
Why did adding songs to Spotify make you sad?

(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:38, Reply)
I generally feel I have good music taste
and then I am reminded that I don't really
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 18:41, Reply)
Surely there are just 'good songs' and 'bad songs' regardless of who recorded them?

You like what you like.
Who cares about sense of good taste or bad?
(, Mon 21 Mar 2011, 19:21, Reply)
I enjoyed The Cider House Rules more than I thought I would
I had originally dismissed it as a chick flick, but it's not.

Alt: There's been quite a lot recently. I can NOT get Flamboyant Bella out of my head though (yes I did originally listen to them for the name)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq1RuD2mBMY

In terms of types of music I actually like, I recently came back to Sonic Boom Six after a seven year hiatus (now they're famous and not just playing in the local club :/) and loving them at the moment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1XalWiJt6g

Have any of you seen the film Kick-Ass?
It's on Sky Movies this evening (I think they've been showing it for a few weeks now), but reading the info about the film, it sounds shit.

But then I'm sure I've heard of people saying it's quite good.

Any opinions?

It may be what all of you call Americans, but I'm not a yank.
I'm not sure which is worse, septic or yank.
