I have a bonsai tree
But it's not looked healthy since I bought it. I water it regularly, but the leaves are always brown and dropping off.

The soil's always dry
Like it's not absorbing the water.

You shouldn't water it
you should immerse it entirely in water until it stops bubbling, then leave it out for a few days. Then repeat.

By "it"
I actually mean the pot and roots, not the whole tree.

Are you keeping it somewhere too hot?
I once had a really nice umbrella plant that just kept going brown and losing leaves, no matter how much I tended to iut.
Turns out plants don't like sitting on top of televisions. Who knew?

Mum had this problem with her hydrangeas.
stick some water storing crystals into the soil, might help.
edit - they live best if there's a tray of water beneath them.

It came with a tray under the pot
I shall try a few of the suggested tips, cheers!

I ain't no specialist, but it seems to me that what you have there is a dead bonsai tree.

That's what I reckon.
Should really expect it for a tenner from Morrisons.

Ask Mr Miyagi to help you with it.
He's also dead, mind you.

I know, I've payed my respects at his grave.
Well, I tried, apparently doing the clap-rub-heal thing is considered in poor taste.

Is it in a draught?
Because they might not like that. Unless it's a tree that likes that sort of thing.

This place isn't exactly swimming with non-cuntitude.

How's the soil?
Trees need a lot of water. If the soil in the centre of the pot is dry, take the tree out, wrap the root ball in a tea towel and put in the sink for a few hours until it's nice and moist.

The soil seems very dry and compact
A small glass of water seems to filter through it fairly quickly without the soil looking damp.

Yeah, it does that.
Do the tea towel trick. Once it's moist again, it'll do a much better job of keeping hold of the water. Once it's dry, you might as well be pouring water over a stone.

It's dry because soil isn't actually all that good at taking in water.
it mostly just runs around the outside and out the bottom.
