This is how I see it...
1) The continued removal of facilities for children, youths and young adults is something that needs to be reversed. Take away all the youth clubs and recreation centres and what's left for them to do? In Brighton, the telephone exchange boxes are all graphettied to look awesome. Give these kids a load of spray paint, give them a load of walls, tell them not to do swears, and be creative. See all these football pitches and tennis courts in schools that go empty in the evenings? What's the real cost of keeping the lights on at night and leaving the door open?

2) Kids aren't hungry enough, look at anyone successful by their own merit, then they've been hungry. Weather it's to prove to their parents that they can make it on their own, or weather it's to get out an endless struggle with poverty.

3) Make crime unprofitable.

The thing is
'the continued removal of facilities for children, youths and young adults' is complete bollocks. When I was growing up an 'adventure playground' was a thing of wonder - Winchester had one single youth club - it was that or the fucking cub scouts. I can take my kid to about four of those play parks without even getting on a bus.

London children today have a million and one free and exciting things to do from sports clubs, the world's best museums to shitloads of community projects etc. The idea that these kids have nothing to do is complete rubbish. They'd just rather smoke weed than do anything else - I'm not judging them on this, that's how I was too.

^this
I grew up somewhere where there was basically fuck all to do as a kid (compared to London at least) and I'm still not an antisocial cunt

Only because there's nothing worth looting where you are.

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:33, Reply)
But your parents had jobs
and you had prospects.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:34, Reply)
Don't go brining logic into this AL
you'll make all the lolreactionary types froth and gibber.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:35, Reply)
Quite so.
But the 'they have nothing to do' angle is bullshit.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:35, Reply)
my dad was a miserable cunt
and my mum didn't work

I got a state funded education, we were far from rich. I had to pay my own way through unversity and into buying my own house etc.

The main real reason anyone doesn't have prospects is because they are stupid.

I'll admit I know fuck all about the situation that led to the rioting. I've never lived close to it, or probably even walked through places where it happened.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:36, Reply)
I love how these things always come back to someone saying
"I didn't do it myself, so there is no possible reason on earth why it could possibly have occurred with anyone else because my situation is directly comparable to everyone else's situation."

The implication of taking that line is that there is a massive section of society which has ceased to be considered as human and should be exterminated forthwith.

Now, fine, make that argument, if you're going to start off being jokey and unreasonable, but you can't argue there from a reasoned perspective.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:40, Reply)
I rarely try and argue from a reasoned perspective
I'm all too aware of how limited my experience and knowledge of this stuff is.

Often I'm curious about what the counter is to what I say, rather that actually thinking it.

you could have just put "scousers", dude.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:43, Reply)
not that I want to get drawn into it
but if you know fuck all about it, maybe making sweeping statements about it is not the brightest idea?
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:40, Reply)
welcome to the internet

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:41, Reply)
well, yes, there is this.
But I had thought better of you. You have a beard and a guitar and I am predisposed to like and respect such people.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:42, Reply)
honestly, I don't know enough about it
and don't speculate and try not be too judgmental without enough basis.

There are no easy anwsers really.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:44, Reply)
This is sense
But statements like "The main real reason anyone doesn't have prospects is because they are stupid.", when referring to said situation you know little about does rather make you look a dick, to me anyway, not that my opinion is of any value to you probably.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:47, Reply)
heh, I thought you were talking about the rest of it
that bit was the most blatantly flippant.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:48, Reply)
As you said, welcome to the internet, where no one can hear your tone of voice.
Well, we're clearly doing this wrong, this seems almost like reasoned agreement. Can't have this.

Scabface!
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:49, Reply)
I thought it was extreme enough that it would be obvious
sometimes things need to be discussed sensibly. Not often though.

My face is prickling. The pox has done weird things to my nerves. Occasionally it feels like water is dripping on my face or something.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:52, Reply)
I suppose so.
it's hard to tell, the same statement from Swipey would probably have been sincere, and from Monty who knows, I can never tell how much of his cuntishness is genuine.

Sadtimes on the face, now long til the ritual shackling? Have you thought of covering it with your beard, kind of a 'comb-up' if you will?
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:04, Reply)
true.
it's on the 10th, so have a while. The scabs will have gone, I might just be left a bit scarred and blotchy, but hopefully not too bad.

Fortunately my bieberesque fringe will cover a goodly portion, and my beard and sidies most of the rest. only trouble spot will be my right cheek, which is unfortunately where the worst of it is.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:07, Reply)
I'm sure if you borrowed some of the missus foundation for the day no one would think any less of you.....

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:11, Reply)
hopefully it won't come to that

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:17, Reply)
Apart from everyone on here.

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:21, Reply)
some days I can see where Chompy's whole "that's the joke" thing comes from.

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:27, Reply)
"oh no! the people on the internet think less of me!"
not exactly a big concern
(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 16:46, Reply)
Precisely this.

(, Tue 30 Aug 2011, 15:45, Reply)
I'm not sure if they ever appealed to the sort of kid
they're trying to attract off the streets

My pal 'Aroe' is responsible for about 50% of the graffiti in Brighton.
