The first three Die Hards are pretty solid.
They go from great to really good to really good until the lame ending. Er, what else...The Naked Gun trilogy? Lots of them fluff it on the third film like Superman, X-Men, Alien (although Alien 3 seems to get a lot more apologists as time goes on). Evil Dead maybe, even though the second is a remake of the first and the third is a bit slapdash. Ah yes, got one, Toy Story, I love all three of them.

When seen back to back with Superman 4
Superman 3 is a fucking masterpiece.

I like Alien 3, it has an unrelenting grimness to it that appeals. I don't really think they could have done Aliens again.

Alien 3 has moments of brilliance
I call these "the bits where David Fincher was allowed to do what he wanted without the fucking studio sticking their oar in"

The majority of the film is devoid of these moments, and ruins the damn thing. DG is right though, following Aliens was always going to be a near-impossible task.

The special edition is a lot more coherent, in my view.

Paul McGann certainly benefitted from this version
as most of his character seemed to end up on the cutting room floor first time around.

The original screenplay for Alien 3 sounded incrdible
it was meant to be set on a wooden space monastery populated by monks which included it's own internal corn fields which were set on fire as the climax of the film.

There was a big thing in Empire devoted to this a while back. Real shame it never got made.

I'm looking forward to Ridleys prequel though.

There were a number of screenplays they went through before (and during) filming it
You can read them here:

I've read the one you mentioned and it sounded like it could've been excellent but it would've taken a massive budget to pull it off.

Yeah, I saw a doc on the ideas being tossed around when I got the collector's edition Quadrilogy (as if that's a word)
It did sound like a genuinely interesting direction for the film to take. Shame.

We need Monty to give his opinion, what with being a massive film buff and all.

You can't fill a nosebag with Marathons
Not without a time machine

I missed gloating over you when we smashed your back doors in AWAY. Hahahaha!
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:42, Reply)
I'm guessing no gloating would take place
were to to smash in the Foxtrot Gentleman's entrance
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:47, Reply)
Only during the vile act itself.

Hello mate
Yeah we had a brilliant time thank you. I gave Monty a message for you as he said he might see you - "Upton Park is off unless McLaren goes". He was well confused, bless him.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 16:08, Reply)
Haha!
I'm glad you enjoyed the smoke. Always a bonus if you don't get mugged.

Monty gave me the message. I don't blame you, McLaren is a walking fucking disaster. I reckon that Dutch league title was a completet fluke.

He's bitching about the board not backing him, which is fair play, they're taking the piss
but nonetheless he's taken a team who finished 3rd and 6th the last two seasons and kept masses of clean sheets in doing so into the relegation zone, and lost to 10-man Derby at home for fucks sakes. That takes skill.

Yeah, Superman IV, so shit they filmed parts of it in Milton Keynes
At least Superman III had the ace Superman vs Clarke scene in the junkyard.

The extended cut of Alien 3 I've got is an improvement on the theatrical realease and I can enjoy watching it for certain moments (and the excellent soundtrack) but I don't love it like I do the first two films.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:01, Reply)
And the subway scenes are so obviously the London Underground.
I read that it had its budget cut by about a third, hence why it looks so ropey. Personally I don't think that even a decent budget could have saved it. I still own it though as I picked up the box set for a tenner a few years ago.

Alien 3 was such a disappointment after Alien and Aliens
Alien 4 was OK in a meh sci-fi film way + it had Ron Perlman in, who is cool
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:51, Reply)
ha
"so shit they filmed part of it in milton keynes" should be a more commonly used phrase
