It looks as though none of them came true though, or was the winner further down?

This is an excellent thread
And easily adaptable. Celebrity Death Race - who dies before Chompy republishes this thread next year?
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:22, Reply)
To steal from my prediction last year
Terry Wogan or Billy Connolly will die (only one of them mind)
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:23, Reply)
One of these years you'll be right...

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:26, Reply)
Terry Wogan has actually been dead for years

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:34, Reply)
Mickey Rooney or Ernest Borgnine
*double-checks they're still going*

Yep, them.

In the local pub in the village my Mum lives in they had a 'dead pool' going. I was in the pub when news of Mother Theresa dying came in and they all (my Mum included) rushed to the notice board to see who the lucky punter was. Black-affronted so I was.

Nope, so..

Marvel Clint Eastwood

Really? I thought Deadpool was a 60s creation
but my Marvel chronology is shonky at best. I was surprised to discover that The Falcon was the first African-American Marvel superhero. Older than he looks.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:37, Reply)
My extensive research uncovered the year 1991 as his first appearance.
I only got the reference because I remembered the character name from the Wolverine film.

I'll defend the third film up to a point and I think it has its place in the trilogy..
..but its' certainly a disappointment overall. I think the opera house finale is superb.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:42, Reply)
I can't actually argue with any aspect of this post
But it really does besmirch the legacy. Mind you, how many really good trilogies are there? I don't mean planned trilogies so you can't have Star Wars or Back To The Future. I mean trilogies where the three films are made separately and are all brilliant.

Romero's Trilogy of the Dead is the only one off the top of my head. Don't give me any of that Three Colours shit.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:45, Reply)
Mad Max is a great film, and the second one is even better.
And as for the third one well what can you say about such a genius bit of film.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:50, Reply)
I remember the first Mad Max as being a bit turgid.
Then again it's donkey's since I saw it.

I'm with you on this DG
The second one was more entertaining though

We probably have way too many.
Shelf space is getting tight. Still got about 100 VHS tapes as well.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:59, Reply)
It's okay
It's definitely a prelim story to a bigger film, doesn't stand up brilliantly on it's own.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:00, Reply)
I missed Captain America as well.
That's out in October though.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:01, Reply)
I want to see that too
But I heard it's a bit "meh" too.

I have high hopes for the Avengers.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:02, Reply)
The on set pics I've seen look promising.

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:04, Reply)
Bit concerned about that
Basically has to be an origin story as well as having a suitbaly dramatic storyline and apocalyptic threat (who's the villain? A decent version of Doctor Doom would be nice please) whilst juggling seven major characters, all played by top Hollywood stars. Very tricky balancing act.

But Joss Whedon is bloody good at ensemble pieces, so you never know.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:06, Reply)
Not sure who the villain is
but Loki's in it I've heard.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:07, Reply)
Yes, you get a bit of a clue at the end of Thor

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:09, Reply)
Well, the origin of them has all been done
so all it needs to do is have the emergence of the baddy, which I guess is your origin story, so you're right, but then Nick Fury just goes "Avengers! Assemble! I've had it with those mother fucking baddies on my motherfucking planet!"
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:09, Reply)
I am really looking forward to it.
reserving judgement on the new Superman, though. Not sure about the costume for starters.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:11, Reply)
But it's being directed by Zack Snyder!
And he made that brilliant Dawn of the Dead remake. And 300 was ok, Sucker Punch was utter wank, but Watchmen was good.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:14, Reply)
True.
The costume just doesn't look right though. I'm not bothered about the 'no pants' look, but the colours are too dull and it needs a belt at least.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:15, Reply)
That Dawn of the Dead remake was fantastic.

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:18, Reply)
Agreed

I really, really hope this happens
They will need to do a bit of origin for the team though, and Black Widow is massively underwritten thus far and Hawkeye hasn't been introduced at all.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:12, Reply)
Wasn't Hawkeye in a cameo in Thor, though?

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:13, Reply)
It did occur to me as I hit "post this message"
that I can't categorically state that Hawkeye hasn't been introduced without having seen Thor or Captain America. Can't imagine he'll have much to do in Avengers anyway. The trick will be getting the rest of the cast to stop glaring at Robert Downey Jnr for being much, much better than them.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:14, Reply)
Was he? Who is Hawkeye?

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:17, Reply)
The character or the actor?

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:18, Reply)
Wasn't he in M*A*S*H?

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:19, Reply)
Jeremy Renner is the actor playing him
Hawkeye the character was, as you might expect, an expert archer. Not as much fun as Bullseye, sadly. And he had a really bent costume.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:19, Reply)
Bullseye was the best thing about the Daredevil film.

Pete Postlethwaite had a good role in The Town, one of his last ones

It's pretty good.
It's not a patch on 2, but as a vengeance type road movie, it's pretty good.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:53, Reply)
Yeah, the second one's much better

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:54, Reply)
The 'Vengeance' trilogy
Not technically linked together so it's a bit of a cheat.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:52, Reply)
Yeah, you can't count it if it's only a trilogy because the director says it is

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:54, Reply)
A bit like the 'Dollars' trilogy

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:55, Reply)
Haha, thought so.
All good films though, Lady Vengeance not quite as good as the other two.
If only he'd done I Saw the Devil. That is a revenge film.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:55, Reply)
The first three Die Hards are pretty solid.
They go from great to really good to really good until the lame ending. Er, what else...The Naked Gun trilogy? Lots of them fluff it on the third film like Superman, X-Men, Alien (although Alien 3 seems to get a lot more apologists as time goes on). Evil Dead maybe, even though the second is a remake of the first and the third is a bit slapdash. Ah yes, got one, Toy Story, I love all three of them.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:54, Reply)
When seen back to back with Superman 4
Superman 3 is a fucking masterpiece.

I like Alien 3, it has an unrelenting grimness to it that appeals. I don't really think they could have done Aliens again.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:56, Reply)
Alien 3 has moments of brilliance
I call these "the bits where David Fincher was allowed to do what he wanted without the fucking studio sticking their oar in"

The majority of the film is devoid of these moments, and ruins the damn thing. DG is right though, following Aliens was always going to be a near-impossible task.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 14:59, Reply)
The special edition is a lot more coherent, in my view.

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:00, Reply)
Paul McGann certainly benefitted from this version
as most of his character seemed to end up on the cutting room floor first time around.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:03, Reply)
The original screenplay for Alien 3 sounded incrdible
it was meant to be set on a wooden space monastery populated by monks which included it's own internal corn fields which were set on fire as the climax of the film.

There was a big thing in Empire devoted to this a while back. Real shame it never got made.

I'm looking forward to Ridleys prequel though.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:01, Reply)
There were a number of screenplays they went through before (and during) filming it
You can read them here:

www.alienexperience.com/index.php?Itemid=18&option=com_docman

I've read the one you mentioned and it sounded like it could've been excellent but it would've taken a massive budget to pull it off.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:05, Reply)
Yeah, I saw a doc on the ideas being tossed around when I got the collector's edition Quadrilogy (as if that's a word)
It did sound like a genuinely interesting direction for the film to take. Shame.

(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 16:08, Reply)
Haha!

Monty gave me the message. I don't blame you, McLaren is a walking fucking disaster. I reckon that Dutch league title was a completet fluke.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 16:14, Reply)
He's bitching about the board not backing him, which is fair play, they're taking the piss
but nonetheless he's taken a team who finished 3rd and 6th the last two seasons and kept masses of clean sheets in doing so into the relegation zone, and lost to 10-man Derby at home for fucks sakes. That takes skill.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 16:24, Reply)
Yeah, Superman IV, so shit they filmed parts of it in Milton Keynes
At least Superman III had the ace Superman vs Clarke scene in the junkyard.

The extended cut of Alien 3 I've got is an improvement on the theatrical realease and I can enjoy watching it for certain moments (and the excellent soundtrack) but I don't love it like I do the first two films.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:01, Reply)
And the subway scenes are so obviously the London Underground.
I read that it had its budget cut by about a third, hence why it looks so ropey. Personally I don't think that even a decent budget could have saved it. I still own it though as I picked up the box set for a tenner a few years ago.
(, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 15:03, Reply)
Alien 3 was such a disappointment after Alien and Aliens
Alien 4 was OK in a meh sci-fi film way + it had Ron Perlman in, who is cool
