This is great news.
Even if no life exists on this Europa, the point is that the goldilocks zone is now increased for this solar system and all other solar systems too. Making the chance of life that is based on water, more likely elsewhere. Remembering that on this planet life is always associated with water, and that no matter how harsh the condidtions here, some life always exists in water.

The area in a system where it is neither too hot nor too cold for life to exist.
Thanks for reading.

Is that a scientifically observed term or something you've just made up?
Either way, it's brilliant :-)
(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:03, Reply)
It's the proper scientific term.

(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:03, Reply)
I love that
Although I maintain it would a term better applied to fussy squatters

And food thieves

(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:08, Reply)
You'd have to be pretty fucking fussy to only squat in a flat
which came with ready-made porridge

It's the outer limit of the area in which a gentleman may 'cast his porridge'.

I prefer the term challenge to limit

A dodgy anime film. Probably.

Um, actually, I think the Goldilocks zone refers to there being a warm enough surface temperature for liquid water to be retained.
If Europa has warm water due to volcanic activity then it doesn't count as the Goldilocks zone.

I think.

EDIT: I am correct in this. The term refers to habitability and the ability to maintain liquid water on the surface. So Europa is not in the Goldilocks zone after all.

*sadface*

But what about the Space Penguin's beds and chairs?

(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:12, Reply)
Always

(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:13, Reply)
You are correct, but I believe the current usage need extending to include all area where water can sustain life.
Since the term came into being, on this planet, the places where water sustains life have increased.
(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:10, Reply)
I don't believe it needs amending.
There is a difference between a planet having the right conditions for carbon based life and there being liquid water under the surface. Europa is freezing cold. Nothing could live on its surface.
(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:12, Reply)
Not arguing about this.
If you were searching for life, where would you look?
(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:15, Reply)

(, Thu 17 Nov 2011, 11:12, Reply)
