Best Ps2 games?
yeah I know. I'm not a gamer, never owned a console, but as mt boy is getting a PS3 from his grandad for xmas my ex has suggested I have hs old ps2 at mine for him to play when he's here. So I was thinking the games must be pretty cheap now I might get a few, any recommendations peeps?

Alt: How was your weekend?

There are loads of excellent PS2 games.
For the wee man, try him with Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Lego Star Wars.

For you, GTA: Vice City, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, God of War, Resident Evil 4, Canis Canem Edit, Manhunt, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, GTA: San Andreas, Transformers, Psychonauts and We Love Katamari.

EDIT: Yes, I now realise it is his old PS2 and he will have games. But if he doesn't have the ones I listed, they are well worth picking up. For you as well as him.

Duly noted, cheers doze.
there's some definite possibles there. He loves lego star wars on the Wii I never thought, but of course it'll be on the ps2
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:43, Reply)
Lego Star Wars started out on the PS2.
The Lego Batman game is ace, but the Lego Indiana Jones one not so much. Lego Indy was in fact the last ever PS2 game I bought.

I have a Wii, a PS2 and a 360.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:45, Reply)
I don't pay attention to these things.
but with a free console and cheap games I might dip my toe in.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:54, Reply)
You can get preowned PS2 games for £5 in Game & Gamestation.
Pretty sure Ebay is your best bet though. But every game I listed up there is stone cold classic.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:55, Reply)
S'OK
He's not got many, the wii took over, it's really more my ex's PS2 so he only has like 5 games for it.

God of war 3 was amazing, really engaging and probably the most stunningly scaled cinematics I've seen on _any_ medium....
... when you're running through a forrest slashing enemies only for the whole earth to tip sideways and to realise this forrest is just the shoulder of a titan, and that titan is climbing mount olympus with loads of other titans while the gods try and defend it.... it's just amazing.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:47, Reply)
Cheers Gonz, I'll add it to the list.

(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:51, Reply)
God of War 3 is only on PS3.
The first two are on PS2. They are a bit like Devil May Cry, but based on Classical mythology.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:53, Reply)
Is that good?

(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:55, Reply)
They are good, if you like hack n slash games.

Only game I ever bothered with on the PC were
Unreal Tournament
Halo
WOW
that's all I can thing of. I remember getting bored with halflife and giving up before I god a gun.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 18:59, Reply)
Half Life 2 is one of the finest games ever.
Haven't played the first one though.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:03, Reply)
I liked games where you could shoot people
It didn't let me do that. I got annoyed.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:05, Reply)
True story, I was a concept tester for unreal tournament...
... they took it to a famous (and the 'only' at the time) LAN-cafe I used to go to, and gave myself and about 15 friends a free all-nighter (£30, 9pm-9am) to watch us to see if there was a market for a shoot-em-up game that had no story or single-player (minus bots). This was before Quake 3 was known to the world, and it had never been done before. The graphics were amazing, considering it was a concept, it only had about 6 weapons and 2 maps. They watched us play it for a couple of hours, recording stats and giving us NDAs and asking as what we thought of it.

The third one is only out on the PS3, but you can get the first two, I donno how old your little one is, but the third one is genuinly scary at points.
The beat 'em ups are good fun, and something you can join in with too. If one of the kid's hobbies is playing video games, then I think you might have more fun for him to play games that are before his time, rather than one he's grown up with.

I mean, let's say the PS2 is the console I've grown up on, and I've played most of the good games, played them a lot... then I'd be a bit miffed that I'm only _just_ getting the new version (PS3), as even a lot of the PS3 games are considered out-dated. What I mean is, the 'PS3' would be new to him, and the 'PS2' would be old, right? But just because something is old to the world, it doens't mean it's old to him.....

....what I'm trying to say is, how about sourcing a N64/Gamecube (if he's never had one), where although the games are 'old', they'll be new to him... and with the Gamecube ones, they'll also still look not-bad. Not only that, they're rediculously cheap (like, you'll get change out of £30 on ebay), and they're also made for younger people too, where as children has never been a key demographic for Playstation.

I honestly had a hell of a lot of fun playing the gamecube games, such as Mario Party, geniune fun, than any other console, both as for drinking-games and silly fun.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:16, Reply)
Cheers gonz, but not looking to buy more consoles
TBH no too happy about hving this one in my house, but trying to make the best of it. your argument applies though as he only ever had about 5 games for this so there's plenty of scope, plus PS1 games will run on this I thing =k and they must be dirt cheap now.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:20, Reply)
Ahh, cool. I like the gun games too, like the Time Crisis series.
Out of interest, and mostly because I'm bored and fancy a bit of a debate, why do you have this stance on video game consoles? Video games are just as valid format for telling stories and entertaining as film. For every cinimatic experiance that I can think of, especially limiting it to children's media, there is a videogame that can go toe-to-toe in depth of story and level of engagement.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:25, Reply)
Sorry mate not much debate.
Just not a gamer. I rarely enjoy computer games much, never been very good at them and anyway preferred to play on the PC for the 2 or 3 I ever got in to. I don't want it in the house because it's clutter I don't need and I'm trying to de-clutter ATM
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:30, Reply)
Yeah', but the kid ovbously likes them and you can see how someone (if not yourself) can get enjoyment out of them. They don't take up that much room, just sitting near the telly.
They have a lot of advantages, they can help someone want to read, hand-eye co-ordination, puzzel solving, logic-thinking.... and that's not even covering entertainment value. I'm one of the fastest and most acreate typers I know*, and I can put that squarely down to video games, although I admit that'll be PC games rather than ones using a gamepad.

Also, wouldn't it score brownie points with the kid? You know, something you can do with him on a rainy day, help him want to be at yours (I'm far far FAR from saying that'll be the only reason, but every bonus counts in the war against him wanting to be around his mates rather than 'rents (at that kindda age, all my mates with devorced parents still loved both their 'rents, but would rather be with mates any day of the week).

One way to look at it is like a DVD player that only plays kid's films; you wouldn't get much out of it but the kid will.

* i know I have a lot of spelling mistakes, but I always press the keys that I want too, that's not a typo, it's just a poor spelling.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:43, Reply)
Sure he does, I have no problem with this.
The space it'll take up is where I like to keep DVDs and I need to put the games somewhere too, not a lot of space but I already have more shit than space.

For the rest. I'm not anti I'm just not interested personally, see also:football.

He already wants to be a mine and we have plenty of stuff to do, we have more trouble w=fitting in every thing we want to do, yes, it'll be one more thing for him to do but there's no shortage.

Also he gets lots of gaming in at his mums, I tend to see my role are providing opportunities for more olod fashioned boys stuff, like bike riding, swimming am=nd reading book. he gets a good balance this way and seems to enjoy both eually.
(, Sun 4 Dec 2011, 19:50, Reply)

No thankfully.
The crag we climbed would have been to dangerous to attempt if there was snow. It really was barren and rocky.
