My bank loan is now at the half way stage.
It was my fault for letting my ex run it all up in my name, but I had none of the fun of it.

I moved out when we split upshe sold the house despite that being in breach of a court order and shipped all the financial assets of the marriage plus the equity to the US into a bank account not in her name.
Almost impossible to recover. The court seized her UK assets, effectively, but I only got 16K back and it cost me 8K in legal fees to get that.

These things happen.If someone said to me "Give me ten grand to keep this nutter out of your life" I'd have found it. So that's basically what I did. Pursuing the money would have meant aggro and contact. Some of it was down to me, but mostly i used it to pay rent when I got none from her, or it would be a 'loan' that i never got back here and there. it built up.
lesson learnt.

it's so unromanticbut deeds of trust are essential. you should never underestimate how much someone can fuck you over at some point down the line. and if they baulk at a deed of trust or a living together agreement, then that of itself is a bad sign.
i see sooooo many people who've been done over by former partners, siblings, even parents/kids. it's really sad.

dependsbut yeah, family lawyers can unpick it more than most. esp if you have kids.
the main thing to watch out for is if you are putting more cash in than the other party. otherwise it doesn't really matter.

The court will always start from the position it's a 50:50 split if no kids.You'd have to go some to get anything else. Deed of trust would count the same as a pre-nup - ie fuck all unless the marriage was short. Investment of time is the same as money in a divorce so being a higher contributor is irrelevent unless you can somehow prove the other party had been hiding money away or blowing it on their own lifestyle. Been there, done that, sold the t-shirt to cover the legal fees.

If the marriage is shortyou're entitled to take back what you brought in, so if you had a lot before you were married you'd get that back - but much over 5 years and even that doesn't apply.

i've never done family law, so i am vague there. it's kind of a grey overlapbut i HAVE succeeded on a deed of trust where the husband put in 90% and the wife 10%. however, she may have baulked at the fees and backed down.
ah, they'd only been married 3 years. maybe that explains it.
