Do you know any first aid?
A guy here had an epileptic fit today next to me. I didn't know what to do, apart from seeing he didn't bang his head, I just hit the panic button and stood looking vaguely embarrassed, until someone turned up who knew what to do. Then the paramedics turned up, and I'm still filling forms in.

I used to have epileptic seizures.
You roll the fitter onto their left hand side and then move anything they could injure themselves on out of the way. You do not attempt to restrain them. This is because all the switches in their brain that regulate how much muscle power they use have been turned off. They are capable of breaking your arm.

I nearly bit some woman's finger off. She thought I was choking and stuck it down my throat.

I'd rather just rely on our first aider. But then again, he's got a week off, so we're basically screwed.

Isn't it illegal to not have someone trained on site at all times?

(, Tue 26 Jun 2012, 12:19, Reply)
Probably,
but as it's a charity they make up their own rules.

When I worked in the building trade, a guy fell off the 2nd lift of a scaff.
Hit his head and died later. Nothing we could do, total bummer.

My brother is epileptic and has bad fits regularly
You just leave them too it. Also a lot of epileptics hate it when people call an ambulance because its embarrassing and for them and inconvenient to have to be carted off to hospital. Last fit my brother had he thrashed like mad, went grey and his lips turned blue, he then just lay there twitching for about 20 minutes and then came round. Half an hour after that a switch goes and he was pretty much back to normal.

Define "normal".

Bit woosy but can actually talk to you again
My bro can talk after he comes round but its a bit mental and he doesn't remember any of it. When the switch clicks you can actually explain that he had a fit and he says "Oh fuck" Then goes off to puke up the blood he swallowed biting a chunk out of his tongue.
