Food trends
We've seen a boom in Mexican food in the past year or two and now I'm noticing Scandinavian food getting 'mad props'.

I put it to you that this move is due not due to the excellence and especially tasty nature of the cuisine but because food journalists are jaded and bored and need something new to get excited about. It looks like OK grub but nothing to have a wank about.

Which nation or region's food is criminally overlooked and which is overrated? I like Thai a lot but think it's extremely limited.

Alt: smegging smeg you smeg-head!!!! LOL!!!!!

This is quite possible
My wife's old housemate is one of the Scandanvian chefs being "bigged up" by the press right now. Just released a book called Scandilicious. The food is interesting and her stuff is great, but I suspect it's a bit of a fad. And in her case, it helps that's she's extremely attractive.

I found the food in Norway to be fresh and pleasant but a little dull.
Not unlike Norway itself.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 15:56, Reply)
Sig is half Swedish, half American
so her stuff is pretty varied rather than dull ... but it's still nothing earth-shattering
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 15:59, Reply)
Traditional Romanian food is absolutely fucking repulsive.
That shit will *never* become trendy.

Beeeaaauuutiful

I'm quite partial to a bit of lutefisk
Surstroemming and hákarl can, however, get to absolute fuck.

Scotland.
This weekend I will be making skirlie. And haggis makes an excellent stuffing.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 15:54, Reply)

London needs a proper, cheap, US Diner (not out in the middle of fucking Shoreditch and most definitely not shitty "Ed's") that sells proper American breakfasts and proper American sandwiches stuffed to the brim with meat and cheese.

Everyone's gone spastic about Pitt Cue Co in Soho.
Not been yet, but Bubba's Barbecue Pit in Spitalfields (alas no longer there) was truly excellent. I am going to defy B3ta tradition and declare that Bodean's food is fucking rubbish. It's no better than TGI Fridays.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 15:58, Reply)
RIP Bubba's. It was fucking superb.
I dislike a lot of Mexican food, most seems to be fried slop.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:09, Reply)
Lupita's is excellent - some of those burrito chains are bollocks.

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:13, Reply)

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:21, Reply)
Not that I am averse to BBQ Pits, but that's not a diner.
Although I may well be checking it out now anyway.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:58, Reply)
I'm with you on bodeans
I love the company I'm with but the food is shit. I had ribs in harvester last weekend and you know what? They were fantastic.

Bodeans is all boil in the bag bullshit. Not a single char mark on my last lot of ribs.

I could go through a ton of creamed corn though

I was impressed with Malaysian food,
but it's basically a mix of thai, chinese, indian, and eggs. So it's not exactly original.

American food, specifically the creol sort from southern states is pretty rare at the moment and it's awesome.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:04, Reply)
Southern US food is fucking lovely.

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:13, Reply)
But still fairly rare I think.

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:17, Reply)
Some is; collard greens, biscuits & gravy, chicken pot pie etc.
But grits can fuck the fuck right fucking off.

That's creole, not southern US. Different type of food entirely.

I have discovered a great new foodstuff from India
Known as "curry".
It might not be to everyone's taste, but I think it could become quite popular over here.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:04, Reply)
It'll never catch on.

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:09, Reply)

Was reading some book written in 1906
which featured two maiden aunts popping down to town for their thursday treat- a curry at the Indian restaurant.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 17:10, Reply)
London's first Indian restaurant opened in 1812

I wonder how much the food they served has changed from then to now?

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 17:15, Reply)
As I understand it
early anglo-indian food veered towards Indian-ified British dishes as opposed to 'authentic' stuff. Things like Coronation Chicken and Mulligatawny soup.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 17:39, Reply)
Yes, but I'm led to believe that even now the stuff we consider to be authentically 'Indian'
isn't what they eat in India, so... Mind you, we're probably a sight closer now than with Coronation chicken.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 17:48, Reply)
Actuall Japanese food
and not just the wagamama shit we get over here, is fucking amazing. Mind you, you can't get most of the ingredients and veg over here.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:20, Reply)
It's five to pub
I'll probably eat some peanuts or something when I get there.
(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 16:25, Reply)
I can't get enough of the Congolese
jungle food.

Gorilla's really good, but Rhino's my favourite, not white Rhino though, just the black stuff.

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 17:56, Reply)
It's often as not the easiest way to get blood to practise certain techniques on
as there's a ridiculous catch-22 that you can't work on study bloods until you're trained, but we only have study bloods to work/train on unless we bleed ourselves...

(, Thu 28 Jun 2012, 18:00, Reply)
it is IMPOSSIBLE to like both metal and electronic music.
Everyone knows that electronic 'music' isn't music, and that Metal is the only outlet for meaningful lyrics and musical talent.
