Bath and Bristol
Hi,

I may or may not be getting some job interviews in the West-Country. I’m getting a bit fed up with the companies dithering about whether or not they want to give me an interview, so I may just end up organising the London Bash on the earlier date and basing myself in Bath (and possibly Bristol too) and go exploring/sightseeing etc.

So does anyone have any tips for things to see or do in Bath, Bristol and the surrounding area?

Cheers.

Leave a trail of bread as you go in,
last time I ended up stuck in Bath for an hour and a half not knowing how to get out of the bloody hilly place.

Brizzle
has an excellent bar which is also a micro-brewery located at the top of a lot of steps in the town. It has a lovely selection of ales and great views over the city :o)

Well
if you fancy a couple of hours of floating around in natural springs, go here: www.thermaebathspa.com/

You don't have to have any treatments or anything - they've got an open air pool on the top floor and some lovely steam rooms below.

I don't usually like this sort of thing much, but this place is lovely. Very relaxing.

I think
baby_kitten is referring to Zero Degrees, at the top of the Christmas Steps. Good beer, food's okay, service is appauling. There's a pub not far from there called the Ship. I wouldn't recommend it; I'm merely drawing your attention to the fact that I worked there for 6 months. :)

The Tobacco Factory on North Street in Bristol is pretty nice. The food's fab. North Street has come a long way since I lived there, nearly 10 years ago.

The bars on the floating harbour can be a bit hit and miss, best avoided on a Saturday night. Sitting outside the Arnolfini in the sun having a beer is always nice though. And there's a cider pub on a boat, I want to say at the end of King Street which I went to for my leaving do which is one of my favourite bars in Brizzle.

I also like the market in Corn Street...

Bath is just pretty. And hard to navigate. And hilly. Never had a bad night out there though.

It was very pleasant.

I didn't know you lived in Bristol, Rakky!
Bristol has been my home for about 8 years or so and it is all of the woo. Too many hippies, mind you. M.Spakka - I'll say hello for a pint if you give me a shout.

Re: Bristol and Bath
@ Baby Kitten: That bar is caled Zero Degrees and some of their beers aren't half bad at all but Rakky is right that the service is appalling.

The Corrie Tap is worth a go at the moment since the students are away.

IMHO Bath has a number of nice bars along by the river but isn't much good for anything else.

Oh, if you're fond of dirty clubs playing d&b I'd heartily recommend The Black Swan but it is a bit far out of town.

Shame there's increasing amounts of b3ta-ness going on in Bristol a mere 2 months after I move out. :(

CHCB
I lived there for six years, PhD and first postdoc. I loves Bristol, I does. Most of my friends are still there, or in Bath. I try to go back as often as I can.

Oooh, The Corrie Tap. I used to live opposite there! mmm Exhibition cider. So good, so lethal...

Thanks for the tips.
I’ve now decided to spend Tuesday night in London, and head to Bath on Wednesday. Sometime during Thursday, I’ll head to Bristol, and sometime during Friday, I’ll head off to Devon to meet my friend.

Re Thermae Bath Spa: That’s the perfect cure for my post London-bash hangover! What a wonderful way to spend the Wednesday afternoon. Seems a bit expensive, but worth it. Went to a similar place in Budapest.

@CHCB:
I’d definitely be up for that. Thursday evening (24-7) would be the best time for this. If you can’t make Thursday evening, perhaps we could do lunch.
