I don't get why any British person would travel over to fight volentery for ISIS [or whatever they're called this week]. I just don't get who would think "This is the correct thing to do". Don't get me wrong, I can see how someone would want a life of deborchery, and all other kinds of unsavoury lifestyles... but what does one hope to gain by joining ISIS?

You're obviously aware that advertising and propaganda are effective, so it's just a form of that.
Muslim men and boys, in a country like this that is becoming increasingly hostile to foreign immigrants, especially religious one, in some areas, brought up to believe in God are given an opportunity (as they see it) to get an identity . to make a difference.
It almost like emo kids, or those weirdos that wear tails, or people full of piercings. Just extreme. Really extreme.

Fucking Hoxton pricks. I wanted to ask him what was wrong with him.

I would have thought though that someone in their family/peers/religion/etc would say " Hang on a minute, think about this...", and let's say they're being hate-preached too, I would have thought someone would cough up to the po-po

you often see families that have no idea quite how radical someone has become, until they have upped sticks and are shooting people

Shit, fathers and brothers kill female members of their own family for "shaming" the family.

It's a whole culture that strips people of any real freedom of expression, yet tells them that if they're not good enough at following orders they'll be eternally punished. They live under a rule of thumb, and although some never become extreme, if your entire life your told by your closest family and peers you might not be good enough. And then the country your in tells you you're probably free leading rapist scum. And then a man your age offers you untold riches and dreams if you die fighting. Some will trot off.

communities they believe to be terrorist for years. Killing women and chhildren a la Israel.
Couple that with minority governments in both Irag and Syria and hey presto. A cause to fight for and as Winders says an identity.

Hamas aren't getting outraged at the Muslims being killed by other Muslims. That's fine. It's Muslims being killed by outsiders they hate.
On the other face of the coin, the Israelis would be far more likely to attempt to mediate if it was anyone other than Palestinians.

I assume they're some sort of covert strategy to counter-balance the effectiveness of the Russians.

You get told about Assad killing children and using chemical weapons, and want to do something about it. Unlike most emotive conflicts in far away places, this one has a rebel army that is open to outsiders and foreigners joining the fight so long as they are muslims.
Once you are out there feeling like a proper big man with an AK47 in your hands, you start getting into the madness and become more and more mental.
Well that's what happened to me anyhow.

they are really fighting to protect the people of Syria from Assad.

our government and the US were about to ally with these people and give them weapons.
( , Fri 29 Aug 2014, 15:21, Reply)

That's precisely why they didn't get involved in Syria.
Syrian government - bad m'kay
Syrian rebels - some good, some bad
Makes it fucking tricky to help anyone without just making it all worse.

but it's for an hour and I get to pick the music, which will be fun. I'm the emergency stand in for a real life award winning author
(BTW it's not a massive radio station, I'm just excited by how daft it is for me to be interviewed as a celebrity already)

I don't get why any British person would buy one voluntarily from Apple [or whatever they're called this week]. I just don't get who would think "This is the correct thing to do". Don't get me wrong, I can see how someone would want a life full of fashion tech, and all other kinds of throwaway gadgets... but what does one hope to gain by buying an iPhone 6?
