disappear
How easy would it be to just disappear? Would it be possible to just walk out of the house with nothing more than a little money, go on to create a whole new life somewhere else and never be traced? I keep coming to conclusion that your National Insurance number would give you away. Unless you went abroad, I suppose.

Unless you were seriously wedged up, and could support yourself independently.

Well you could
Go to france and return without ID, ensuring you get picked up by HRMC or Immigration. Feign amnesia but with a uk accent (or better still a variety of accents). After a while I'm sure they'll give up and you can get a new ID. Including NINo. Depends on not having a criminal record.

I think so
If you were savvy with living off the land Ray Mears' style, then maybe, and providing you stayed well away from civilisation. North-west Scotland perhaps. At most entering tiny villages, doing odd jobs etc to tide you by in things that absolutely need cash.

I bet it's a lot easier in America.

it would be easier to hide in a big city. In a small village in NW Scotland, everyone knows everyone else, so a mysterious incomer would stand out.

It really depends
on how badly you want to vanish. Disappearing means becoming a street person or a nomad in the woods. It means to consistent bed, no constant source of income, not knowing where you're going to eat next, and all the rest. If you're living off the land, it means possibly accidentally poisoning yourself and eating things that ordinarily you would never consider.

I looked very closely at doing it about ten years ago, and in retrospect I'm glad I didn't.
