Need some help
I'm looking at going to Barcelona with a couple of mates in the new year (end of Feb) and was wondering of anyone had some recommendations about hostels we could stay in and bars/areas to go to?

The old town

Avoid all the tourists areas and stay in the old town, somewhere like the Santa Maria square. It's full of little allyways that looked grubby and derelict during the day, but at night all the shutters come up and there are hundreds of independant shops, bars and restaurants.

I stay with a freiend these days but try lovingbarcelona.com for an apartment.

There's a youth hostel
By the tube station on Via l'Etana (spelling? The one parallel to the Ramblas)

Make sure you check out all the Gaudi stuff, Park Guell is a personal favourite! The Gaudi bus tour is worth going on. And whatever the fort's called by where the Olympic village was.

And there's a well good club in a castle on top of a hill, but I can't remember what that's called.

One of my favourite cities, haven't been for a few years though. Can you bring me some fags back?

nerdy museum suggestion
You may be going to go already, but the Dali Museum / gallery is well worth about 3 hours of wondering around.

Definitely!
I think there's a small one in Barcelona, but the one in Figueres is well worth the trip.

If,
Whilst stumbling down la ramblas at 3a.m. you are asked the time by a couple of friendly (looking) locals, feel free to comply.

However, be wary of them attempting to shake your hand, put their arm around you to say thanks, and fishing in your pocket to steal your wallet containing 100 euros, your driving license and your bank card.

Just a word of advice.

I've been pickpocketed in Barcelona
Well, I think so.

I got so pissed I lost about 8 hours from my memory, and also my wallet and phone. Never lost my wallet and phone no matter how wrecked I've been, so I reckon that's what must have happened. Illustrates the stupidity of drinking 18 gallons of sangria then wandering round the back alleys of a strange city by yourself though...

I know a few other people who've been pickpocketed as well, but in 5 or 6 trips to Barcelona it's only happened to me once when shitfaced.

What the last two said
Don't have your wallet, keep notes folded up in the johnny-pocket of your jeans.

Oh my favourite city!
Definitely go here if you get the chance
www.tallerdetapas.com the food is amazing and not too expensive. Though you will find lovely places if you just wander around, avoid places with tourist menus - if you can.

You should try to see if you can rent an appartment for the few days, it can often be cheaper & nicer than hostels, especially around that time of year, and with a few of ye.

Gaudi's 'Parc Guell' is amazing, and those that are interested in football always like Camp Nou.

The Gothic quarter is lovely to wander around - taking the tour of the city (bus) is enjoyable too...
