Help?
Me and a friend are going on a road trip around England next week. We haven't actually decided where to go yet though...
We've been looking on teh net for any places that might be interesting to visit, markets/ fairs/ museum type places... but can't really find anything.
So I was wondering if any of you lovely people know of any places that might be good?

Let us know:
1) Where you are
2) Where you're going
3) Any other pointers?

And we might be able to help ;P

Just steer well clear..
..of the West Midlands.

Although the Malvern Hills are worth a visit
Also, there's a stone circle on the Shropshire border towards Wales, that I used to drive to lots. Can't remember the name just now, but it's a really atmospheric location, totally isolated and otherworldly, with jaw-dropping views over a massive valley to distant mountains in Wales. Check out www.themodernantiquarian.com for loads of off-beat ancient sites, if you dig that sort of thing. Erm.. as I suspect a lot of b3ta-types don't.

Manchester city centre
The German markets are on at the moment. Albert Square is the best place to go, there are loads of lovely gifty type stalls as well as big sausages and gluhwein aplenty.

as yer man said
skip the Midlands.

Go to the newmarket racing museum, the Burnley brick museum and the Leeds elbow festival

Well
we are from Wales... I don't think we're going to head up north but really haven't planned much yet (we're pretty useless.) The German market sounds good though!

What's wrong with the midlands??

Everything

Where to start..
..it's just dull and depressing and the people are surely the most small-minded in the UK. I might be biased because I live just south of the black country and hate it.

But really, for a second city, Birmingham is rubbish. There's no reason to visit any of the towns and cities that surround Brum unless you have someone to visit (Hey, I could show you round Droitwich but it might destroy your will to live). There's some beautiful countryside, but just like anywhere else.

I am actually going to Birmingham
at some point, to visit a friend... You've got me worried now :P
(, Sun 23 Nov 2008, 19:49, Reply)
Don't go to Coventry.
Don't even go through it on your way to somewhere else.

All these places I can't go to!
I didn't know England was THAT bad...
(, Sun 23 Nov 2008, 21:19, Reply)
I'd take camping in Wales..
..over travelling England anytime, unless I had loads of cash and could go out on the razz in big cities. I like Wales.

Why don't you just go the extra 100 miles and hop over to France?

If you're down near Cambridge
There's Duxford Imperial War Museum. Huuuuge place, and much more interesting than you might expect.

The Imperial war museum is indeed pretty badass..
..it's massive and full of war stuff. There's a room full of early propeller planes with massive guns. It's a total trip, a world within itself. And the teashop is nice, with adjoining place where you can buy little tanks for placing on the front of your car like it's a jaguar except with a tank on the bonnet, not a jaguar.

Cambridge is awesome itself
..blag yourself into the college bars by befriending students and get £1.50 pints after a day taking in so much awesome architecture in such a small space. You can also attend lectures just by walking in - they'll rarely check your student credentials. This worked with language and english lectures five years ago anyway.

Cambridge is indeed awesome
Find some old bastard who'll put you up for the night, ditch him and find some young people who can get you into colleges.

The Cold War Museum
At RAF Cosford. Not far off a Motorway either.

Come to Devon
it's better than everywhere else.

it has:
1. Me
2. Dartmoor
3. Fine surfing beaches
4. Hot women
5. The secret to Ambrosia

Thanks all!
I'm considering the war museum... My friend and I have quite a liking for tanks and guns and such!

I've been to Devon millions of times, I practically know my way around part of it better than I do my home town. It IS an awesome place.

@ djtrailprice - You're not going to get rid of me that easily! You've got to put up with me for a night whether you like it or not now :P
