at a national medical research centre as a vet tech, would it be safe to assume that the animals there were being used as medical subjects do you think?

...how does that make you feel? Are you uncomfortable with it?
BTW, shame you couldn't make it on Friday night, was looking forward to putting a face to your posts.

does this double-negative in fact make you look like an attractice Paula Yates?
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:10, Reply)

If it were a med centre it could be that it was for vet medicines?
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 10:59, Reply)

But maybe they need somebody to look after the animals that they're testing animal medicines on?!
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:10, Reply)

Sounded like you were suggesting that a research center for veterinary medicine wouldn't be testing on animals.
Damn this FUCKING OPEN PLAN OFFICE for destroying my mind and rendering me incapable of interpretting your rhetorical question!

GET OUT OF MY HEAD.
Ahem.
No but I grow sicker of this office everyday.

But my mp3 player ran flat and because it's a simple one it doesn't play while charging. I think I'm going to look for a 240v socket near my desk so that I have other options for music goodness.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:37, Reply)

I would also assume a vet tech's job would involve making the animals feel better, so that's something.

and other nursing duties, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it knowing that they don't have homes to go to and that it wont advance my career and training.

they can barely hold a pen, and yet you expect them to complete an exam in under an hour and a half.

No problem at all, although it's a bit outdated as proved by the guys who took drugs that were tested on animals and swelled up and turned black. Humans and animals are very different, but have a lot of the same genetic make up.
For cosmetic purposes: Absolutely not. I worked in Lush for too long to use anything tested on animals.
Edit: LOLZ Al

Pretty much of similar opinions to me.
Cosmetic-wise, why the fuck should animals get messed with in the sake of vanity?
As for the medical side, some of it's a little out-dated, but a lot of the testing has a genetic basis now, which is helping understanding the basis of all kinds of genetic disease.

One thing I never want to see tested on animals though are hi-tech implants - giving significantly advanced AI devices a living host could end horribly :p

What is a rabbit going to do with a new pair of tits?

Why don't we do medical testing on prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment? It's immoral to just keep them imprisoned forever (under my morality) so if we're unwilling to kill them we should do something useful with them.

"Inhumane".
*sighs*
So's committing terrible crimes, but people seem to forget that.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:25, Reply)

So we'll waste shit loads of money and space keeping these people somewhere in, from what I've heard, pretty nice conditions.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:35, Reply)

also, I really doubt you would like to be in prison.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:36, Reply)

lets examine this. People do bad things. Some people do really bad things. Is the best way out of this situation to do really bad things to the people you think might have done bad things?
But that makes you as bad as those people, so then what gives you the authority to dole out punishment? Surely then other people are justified in doing equally bad things to you?
And of course the biggest reason of all, what if you either got it wrong, or worse, the people who are in charge of doing the bad things are corrupt. Then were are you? You're doling out punishments to the undeserving that cannot be retracted.
Locking people up isn't perfect, but it stops them doing bad things again, and leaves the possibility that, if you get it wrong, there is the opportunity to redress the balance.

I wasn't being serious.
I think prison is a far better solution than the death penalty.
Mostly because there's no going back on a death sentence. If it's a case of mis-trial or whatever, and you've killed the "guilty" party, that's fucking awful.
I think sometimes rehabilitation of criminals is the answer, but in some cases people can be kinda "broken", and there's no way to fix 'em.

"Doling out punishments that cannot be retracted".
How many times has our legal system been proved to be occasionally fallible? It's bad enough for someone who's conviction has been overturned to have to adjust to normal life again without factoring in any trauma or long term health issue from compulsory medical testing.
This isn't China.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 11:50, Reply)

I was just messing around as I happened to consider that society could get more out of these people (in moral ways) than we currently do and thought about inmates with tumors, missing eyes and three arms.
( , Mon 11 May 2009, 12:08, Reply)

But based on what little knowledge I have (ie from the major media outlets, the internet etc) the conditions seem nicer than those endured by people living in poverty besides the restrictions on freedom of movement.
I'm not a supporter of capital punishment but the only one of your arguments I really agree with is the issue of getting it wrong. You can release somebody if you realise you were wrong but you can't bring them back to life.
(Can't be arsed to get into the morality of the other stuff right now, too much typing involved - corner me in the pub sometime)
Penal labour is an idea I'd like to explore if I ever have the time.

Then there will be breeding stock as well as test subjects. It looks like a pretty nice place to work though, and when I had a few interviews there everyone was thoroughly pleasant.
